Overview

Project Purpose

The purpose of the Banner XE Program is to upgrade the SIS modules to Banner 9 prior to the end of INB-support for Banner Support. Immediate goal is to stand up a three-tier environment (DEV, QA, and PROD) as soon as possible so an INB switchover could occur if we had a 90-day notice that Microsoft was discontinuing support for the Java plugin.

Project Objective

Project Goals / Project Objectives
Have the most updated version of Banner so students and faculty can utilize the newest features of Banner XE / Update all modules of Banner 8 to Banner XE

Project scope

Upgrade the Banner 8 to Banner 9 in order to have access to Ellucian / Oracle support services and to utilize the new features in Banner’s latest version. Banner XE is used for the Extended Ecosystem construct which could be Banner 8 or 9, while the new release is Banner 9.

This will include the following:

  • Adding data objects necessary for Database Extension Utility (DBEU)
  • Upgrade of Oracle Database to 12c
  • Moving to Oracle Fusion Middleware 12c
  • Populating necessary values for DBEU Phase II
  • Setup of Banner XE with a Single Sign On Solution
  • Necessary for Single Sign On into Banner XE modules
  • Banner XE Registration
  • Banner INB Replacement (Banner 9 Admin Pages)
  • Setup/Configuration of Banner 9 SSB (Rebranded as Campus)

This will not include:

  • Faculty/Staff Training on Banner 9 after implementation

Project Budget

This is an internal project and level of effort will be provided once business requirements document is completed. This project is a medium sized and will exceed 400 hours.

Assumptions, Contraints, Dependencies

Assumptions

  • SIS team will be able to develop as much backend work as possible as Ellucian progresses through its Java Transformation project
  • Ellucian provides 1-to-1 replacement functionality for INB forms through the project
  • Ellucian is replacing earlier Banner XE stand-alone and SSB components that were built on ZK framework. This should allow us to not deploy any ZK framework modules for Banner XE.
  • Ellucian will continue developing a timeline for moving their SSB delivered content into a Banner 9 package
  • Ellucian will provide a WebTailor replacement solution through the Extensibility project

Constraints

  • Upgrade should be completed before 12/1/17
  • Ellucian just released the last of its INB replacement forms for Financial Aid in January 2017
  • Ellucian currently cannot address some of the SSB functionality and is not sure when they can address the issue
  • TCC Support is limited because of delays by Group I and Group II schools in implementing HR and Finance
  • Servers will need to be configured to connect through the firewall
  • VM’s will limited by available memory and storage

Dependencies

  • SIS team will need to work with Infrastructure on an approach to tie in Banner with Single Sign-On
  • Some tasks are dependent on Ellucian support and could delay project progress.
  • The Application navigator navigates users to the appropriate version of Banner (Banner XE or Banner 8) depending on what application they are trying to access
  • Columbia Advisory Group’s team implementations are dependent on Ellucian delivering their side of the product
