Course Description:

In this self-paced, instructor-guided course, students develop effective note-taking skills. Students analyze their current skills and problem areas. Course includes pre-lecture preparation, effective listening techniques, identifyingkey information in a lecture, outlining skills, note-taking strategies, and the Cornell method of note taking and studying. Application activities reinforce concepts in each area.

This course is designed to be completed independently, with guidance and feedback provided by your instructor along the way. Because the course does not meet as a class, it will be important for you tomake time in your schedule to spend a minimum of 2 hours per week on your packet. Also, you will schedule 6 mandatory midterm report meetings with your instructor this term. These are 15-minute sessions to be arranged by you and your instructor for the following weeks:

Week 1

Week 3

Week 5

Week 7

Week 9

Finals Week before Wednesday

You Will:

  • Apply notetaking techniques in a college environment.
  • Collect and organize important information from varied lecture environments.
  • Apply effective strategies before and after note taking.

Required materials:

  • Mini-course module titled: Taking Lecture Notes(availablein the LBCC Bookstore for under $15.00)
  • A three-ring binder in which to keep your module and handouts organized
Headsets are handy for listening to tapes and recordings you will listen to in the Library.

Grading and Credit:

Doing well in this course depends on your effort. Learning the study techniques and applying them in the exercises will improve your ability to be successful in college. You will get the most from your time if you work steadily through your packet and get feedback from your instructor during check-ins.

The credit will be earned when you have successfully completed and received feedback and a signature from your instructor on all the exercises within the Taking Lecture Notes materials packet.

All exercises must be completed by no later than 12:00 on Wednesday of Finals Week

Grading Scale:

PPass: awarded for full completion of requirements
