Research Interests

Positive adjustment for individuals and families faced with challenging health circumstances and terminal illness. Multicultural issues in healthcare practice and policy with a specific focus marginalized groups. Strength-based approaches to coping with life transitions and losses, including the potential for growth.

Research Experience

Graduate Research Assistant, Patient-Centered Culturally Sensitive Healthcare research project,

University of Florida Psychology Department. August 2006-present.

Co-direct one of the project’s research writing team focusing on writing related to a patient intervention, empowerment, and a model of culturally sensitive healthcare. In addition, this position involves mentoring undergraduate researchers and participating in team activities and patient and provider training workshops.

Graduate Research Assistant, “Stand By Me” program sponsored by the Center for the Advancement of Mental Health Practices in Schools. January 2005-August 2006.

Collaborate with a team of faculty at MU to conduct a statistical evaluation of a federally-funded mentoring project designed to support at-risk youth. Monitored variables include hope, resilience, and psychological adaptation. Supervisor: Dr. Karen Weston.

Independent Researcher, Optioncare Missouri River Hospice, Home Care of Mid-Missouri, and Howard County Home Health and Hospice. October 2004-September 2005.

Conduct in-home interviews with hospice patients and families examining the relationship between attachment, coping, depression, and social support during the end of life so that their needs can be better supported.

Participant Coordinator, Project Parenting, St. Mary’s College. September 2003-August 2004.

Managed and coordinated contact with families participating in a longitudinal research project focusing on positive adjustment for adoptive and biological parents of children with developmental disabilities transitioning into adulthood. Supervisor: Dr. Laraine M. Glidden.

Clinical Experience

Director of Patient Health Intervention, Patient-Centered Culturally Sensitive Healthcare and Health Promotion Project, University of Florida. May 2007 – May 2008.

Direct the patient intervention aspect of this project. The project, funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, seeks to reduce health disparities by improving the quality of care and health outcomes for ethnic minority patients. The intervention aspect of this project involves two 5-hour health promotion workshops for 180 low-income African American, Vietnamese/Chinese, and Mexican patient participants with Type 2 Diabetes. Principal Investigator and Supervisor: Dr. Carolyn Tucker.

Practicum Counselor, University of Missouri Counseling Center. August 2005-May 2006.

Provided individual counseling to approximately five to eight clients per week in a university counseling setting. Participated in weekly case assignment team meetings to discuss clients. Engaged in group supervision twice weekly with other beginning counselors through practicum class, and individual supervision for one and a half hours per week. Clients’ presenting concerns included sexual issues, anxiety, depression, abuse, adjustment, and interpersonal issues. Practicum Instructors: Dr. Roger Worthington (2006) and Dr. Laurie Mintz (2005).

Multicultural Practicum, Center for Multicultural Research, Training, and Consultation, University of Missouri. August-December 2005.

Participated in weekly meetings focusing on increasing multicultural awareness and change through campus and community programs and resources. This practicum had classroom and applied components. Practicum Instructors: Dr. Puncky Heppner and Dr. Lisa Flores.

Co-facilitator of the International Student Discussion Group. September-December 2005.

Co-facilitated a weekly discussion group composed of eight international students focusing on experiences of transition to a new culture. Engaged in weekly peer supervision with other co-facilitators. Supervisor: Dr. Puncky Heppner.

Community Outreach and Activism

Volunteer/Advocate, Alachua County Victim Services and Rape Crisis Center. August 2007-present.

Provide advocacy and on-call services, such as attending the ER, responding to hotline calls, and providing community outreach, to victims of sexual violence.

Hospice Patient Care Volunteer, Fall 2001-July 2006.

Provided psychological and spiritual support for dying patients and their families who are receiving end of life care at home. Over the past five years, I have been registered as a volunteer at the following organizations: Hospice of St. Mary’s County, Community Hospices of America, Optioncare Missouri River Hospice, Home Care of Mid-Missouri, and Howard County Home Health and Hospice.

Language Partners Program, University of Missouri. September 2004-August 2005.

Met bi-weekly for one year with my language partner, a Ph.D. student in Counseling Psychology from Korea. The purpose of the program was to support the adjustment of international students, enhance language proficiency, and promote cross-cultural friendships.
