JOB ADVERTISEMENT

Applications are invited for permanent post, which is available as soon as possible and no later than September 1st 2015. The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to the design, review and delivery of the teaching programmes of the School of Chemistry to undergraduate students at NUI Galway. The candidate will deliver course work in all undergraduate years as well as contribute to postgraduate teaching. He/she will contribute to module coordination. She/he will supervise or co-supervise undergraduate and postgraduate students in research and contribute to wider activities in the School, College and University. The successful candidate will have an excellent understanding of fundamental chemical principles and demonstrate that they can communicate these to students. They will build a research programme in Inorganic Chemistry. Areas of interest are catalysis, materials, solid state chemistry, and/or bioinorganic chemistry. This research programme will add to and complement the research of the School and wider University. The appointee will have excellent interpersonal skills and be prepared to collaborate with their colleagues within the School, University, nationally and internationally.

Requirements

·  BSc in Chemistry and normally a PhD in Inorganic Chemistry or a related area.

·  Experience in teaching at 3rd Level

·  A strong track record of research in Inorganic Chemistry as evidenced by recent research

publications in high quality peer reviewed international journals and the presentation of a research plan in the area

·  The potential to be an excellent teacher of Inorganic Chemistry

·  Excellent understanding of fundamental chemical principles

·  Good organisational skills

·  Ability to work well with people and autonomously

·  Good communication skills

The successful candidate will be involved in teaching core courses in Chemistry in the School of Chemistry. They will teach Inorganic Chemistry at an advanced level. They will supervise final year students in their investigative research project in Chemistry and/or Biopharmaceutical Chemistry and placement students. They will supervise Master and PhD students and are expected to apply for funding to support their research group. They will carry out teaching and other duties as may be assigned by the Head of School.

Salary: note:

€36,230 to €51,104 p.a. (applicable to new entrants effective from January, 2011)

(This appointment will be made on the Lecturer Below the Bar scale in line with current Government pay policy)

JOB DESCRIPTION

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

The post-holder duties will include, but not be limited to, the following:

Teaching

To give instruction and supervision, as directed by the Head of School, to students of the University in courses and programmes organised by the School or to which the School contributes to another School or College. Such duties to include curriculum and course design, preparation and delivery of lectures, tutorials, project supervision and general examination and other assessment responsibilities. The post-holder is also required to be available to students for academic counselling and advice. In some disciplines, academic activities may also include laboratory, workshop or clinical instruction, supervision of fieldwork, site visits and other off-campus activities.

·  Contribute to the development and delivery of teaching programmes in the School of Chemistry in area of Chemistry and Inorganic Chemistry at undergraduate and postgraduate levels

·  Provide a high standard of teaching to students across a range of areas, in particular inorganic chemistry.

·  Supervise placements and undergraduate investigative projects in Chemistry

·  Supervision of MSc or PhD students as required

·  Contribute to the development and review of the curriculum and programmes delivered

·  Confident teaching of student groups of various sizes and at different levels both in the lecture room and in the laboratory

·  Setting examination papers and other assessments at appropriate levels

·  Coordination of modules, and associated examinations and assessments in a timely manner

·  Competent and consistent marking of examination papers and other assessments

·  Supervision of teaching assistants

·  Competent use of a range of teaching methods and strategies and willingness to continually evaluate and improve the effectiveness of their teaching methods and skills

·  Organise and structure their teaching logically to help maximise learning and ensure a good student experience

·  Incorporate recent research developments into courses to enhance student interest and the student experience

·  Demonstrate a commitment to students and give time and effort to engage with, and be accessible to students

·  Gives constructive and timely feedback and advice to students

·  Discourage plagiarism, and work with staff in School to deal with plagiarism when it arises

Research

To engage in research and other creative and innovative activity as appropriate to the discipline. The post-holder is required to disseminate their research in academic publications, other outlets as appropriate and to participate in postgraduate supervision. The post-holder is encouraged to engage in initiatives to seek research funding, as appropriate. The post-holder is also encouraged to promote and engage in the development of collaborative research.

·  Engage in research in an area of Inorganic Chemistry that is a reasonable fit to the strategic goals of the University and that will further strengthen interactions within the School of Chemistry and one or more of the University’s Research Institutes

·  Publish research work in the area of Inorganic Chemistry regularly in high quality, peer-reviewed journals and present research at leading conferences in the field

·  Build up collaborative links locally and externally and keep up to date with research in own area and what is happening in the international research community

·  Be willing to work with industry and other relevant external bodies with regard to the benefits that can result

·  Develop grant proposals which effectively communicate the value and potential benefits from funding their research

·  Effectively plan and administer research projects, including budgeting and reporting

·  Provide quality supervision and guidance in relation to the research of students, motivating and encouraging them to help them to solve chemical problems and to develop problem solving skills

Contribution and Scholarly Activity

To participate in academic administration at School, College and University levels as part of their contribution to the University. To engage with the wider community regionally, nationally and internationally from a civic, economic, social and cultural perspective as a contribution to the life of the University. In representing the University externally, the post-holder is expected to maintain the highest professional standards, thereby enhancing the reputation of the University. The post-holder is expected to engage in scholarly activity such as, but not limited to, refereeing of journals, membership of discipline related advisory bodies and peer review panels and work associated with external examinership.

The post-holder shall carry out these duties under the direction of the Head of the School or of an authorised senior member of the staff of the School.

The post-holder shall be a member of College/Colleges in accordance with University Statutes.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

Essential Requirements:

·  BSc & normally a PhD in Chemistry or related discipline

·  Experience in laboratory teaching or giving lectures or tutorials to undergraduate students

·  Demonstrate potential to contribute to the teaching of Inorganic chemistry at an advanced level to chemistry and biopharmaceutical chemistry students

·  Excellent understanding of fundamental chemical principles and demonstrate the potential to communicate these to students (to be assessed at interview)

·  Postdoctoral research experience

·  Recent research publication in an area of Inorganic Chemistry in peer reviewed high ranking journals

·  Candidate must submit a research plan

·  Good organisational skills

·  Ability to work well with people

·  Strong communication skills

Desirable Requirements:

·  Candidate can demonstrate evidence of successful research grant writing skills
