Synopsis for the talk on “Aquaculture – Opportunity for the 21st Century”

“Aquaculture – Opportunity for the 21st Century”

Jimmy Lim Ah Ong

President,

Institution of Aquaculture Singapore

“Aquaculture, not the Internet, represents the most promising investment opportunity of the 21st Century.”— Peter Drucker, Management Expert & Economist

The world faces one of the biggest challenges of the 21st century: how to feed 9 billion people by 2050 in the face of climate change, economic and financial uncertainty and the growing competition for natural resources.

Fish is already one of the most important sources of protein, while 30% of fish stocks are under severe pressure. At the recent Global Ocean Action Summit held in Netherlands in April 2014, Árni M. Mathiesen – Assistant Director-General of the FAO said:

“'This Summit has put an accent on action and the route to navigate on oceans, fisheries management and aquaculture is much clearer than before “

AQUACULTURE, the production of fish, crustaceans, mollusks and others is a multi-disciplinary and dynamic industry.

World per capita food fish supply increased from an average of 9.9 kg (live weight equivalent) in the 1960s to 18.4 kg in 2009, and preliminary estimates for 2010 point to a further increase in fish consumption to 18.6 kg. Singapore consumption per capita was 22kg much higher than global average – where are we going to get our next fish?

The world’s appetite for fish is growing. Rises in the global demand for fish are expected to continue and the output needed to fulfill is expected to double, reaching an astonishing 230 million tonnes by 2050. Meeting this demand will create a market increased valued upwards of several hundred billion dollars.

As early as 2015, aquaculture is expected to surpass fisheries as the main producer of fish. By 2022, the output of fish from aquaculture will be 35% higher than what it is today (about US$125 billion) which will help to meet rising demand where the current global fisheries market no longer can

Asia accounted for 89% of the world aquaculture production by volume in 2010, with China occupying 61% and yet China is a net importer of seafood now.

Which is world’s most cultured fish – it is the Tilapia. Geographically tilapias are the most wide spread species for aquaculture production in the world. Close to 140 countries and territories are now recorded for farming of tilapias in FAO database.
