Principal’s PenDecember 5, 2016

Dear Families and Friends,

It is hard to believe that it is already December. Just a reminder that December 21st is our last day before school vacation. We will be returning to school on January 3, 2017.

Just a friendly reminder that if there is a delay to the start of school, children should not be dropped off at school until the time reflected in the delay of school announcement. Due to the delay the staff is not available at school to supervise the children. If your child is dropped off early during the delayed start, we will call you to come and pick up your child until the changed start time.

Now that we are in the winter months please remind your child that the weather is colder and that they need to dress appropriately. The students need to wear boots and snow pants if they want to play beyond the tar during recess. This rule applies to all grades at Gilbert School.

Thank you to all of the families and staff that participated in and attended our Harvest Hullabaloo. We had approximately people attend this celebration. It was great to have Gilbert’s Staff, PTO, and Title I all collaborate to sponsor this amazing event. I would like to express a special thank you to Mark Horn as Professor Smartypants for providing the wonderful music during our Harvest Hullabaloo celebration.

The Gilbert Elementary Staff would like to extend wishes for a very Merry Holiday Season to all of our Gilbert Families and Friends.

Educationally yours,

Sue C. Dionne

NEWS FROM THE NURSE

DECEMBER IS HERE

It’s getting colder out there! Please send students to school with jackets, mittens, and hats. Pretty soon it will be snow boots and snow pants. It’s not much fun playing outside when you are cold. The school does have a few extras, but not enough for all the kids.

Please remember to keep kids home when sick. Encourage washing hands with soap and water and coughing into elbow.

Please remember to check for head lice on Sunday nights. Unfortunately, they do not go away with the cold weather.

But, they are easier to get rid of if found sooner than later.

Kindergarten and first grade parents please send in extra clothes. Accidents happen and the school doesn’t always have the right size clothing. It’s much easier to have it at school instead of calling parents to bring clothes in.

As always, please call with questions and concerns.

PTC News!

Gilbert’s Parent-Teacher-Organization (formerly PTC) has a few updates this month - last month we approved a switch to become a PTO. What does this mean for Gilbert families? We’re working on becoming a more formalized group with a clear mission - and we want YOUR feedback!

DRAFT Mission Statement:

The Gilbert PTO strives to provide educational enrichment to Gilbert students, appreciation for Gilbert’s teachers and staff, and promote community building amongst families and in the broader Augusta area. Gilbert’s PTO complements the school curriculum with additional opportunities for parents, teachers and students to learn, socialize, communicate and grow. The Gilbert PTO also provides parents the opportunity to give feedback, suggestions, and requests to school administrators as the school works to meet the dynamic needs of Gilbert’s students and families.

We’re shifting to align with national PTO programs and are working on becoming a non-profit entity. If you have questions or want to give feedback, please join us on Tuesday, December 6, 2016 at 6 PM for our regular monthly meeting (child care is provided!).

Thank you to all the families who purchased Turkey Raffle tickets- your contributions raised $674.00! The winners of the raffle, Katri Isbister and Diana Kendall, each received a $50 Hannaford Gift card. Cony Hannaford generously gave our PTO one $50 gift card and so our total funds raised, minus expenses, was over $600!

The PTO is putting together a new Falcon card for 2017 with even more great deals than last year’s card - stay tuned for your chance to buy the card, support our school, and cross off folks from your Christmas list (great gift for your postal delivery person, sanitation worker, etc.!). Details regarding purchase will soon be posted on our Facebook page (Gilbert School PTC).

For appreciation activities this month, we provided Gilbert’s teachers and staff a fresh supply of K-cups for their coffee and tea fixes, and some fresh baked donuts from Bolley’s… Yum!

With a solid budget, we are looking for some new educational enhancement ideas - so do join us on Tuesday, December 6 at 6 PM for our next meeting. Many voices make a harmony and we want yours in our tune!

STUDENT COUNCIL NEWS!!

The month of November was a time of giving for student council. The students on our council were able to help 12 families have a Thanksgiving meal thanks to our wonderful Gilbert family. We appreciate everyone who donated food to our “Food for Families” drive and supported Gilbert Student Council once again. Students can make a difference!
