I. Course Description
English Skills for Career Development (Intermediate) is a two-credit course that aims to prepare students for the contemporary globalized work place by focusing primarily on business English. As the recognized international language of business, it is essential that students have grounding in the English skills that allow them to advance in their chosen career. Key to this is the development of (1) speaking ability, and the need for (2) listening, (3) writing and (4) reading skills in a work environment is also recognized in the course structure. Students will be given the opportunity to gain confidence in their ability to use English communicatively through pair and group tasks. As well as fluency, attention will also be paid to grammatical accuracy and vocabulary building. Through sound methodology, students will achieve the end goal of basic communicative competency required for career development.
II. Course Goals
Students will
· enhance the ability to function in English required for career development in the modern workplace.
· learn the key language needed to function in English in general and business situations.
· develop key skills needed in the workplace, including speaking on the telephone, writing emails, and giving and checking information.
· understand sentences and frequently used expressions related to general areas of business
· improve basic grammatical accuracy and build usable vocabulary for speaking and writing.
· complete routine business tasks requiring a simple and direct exchange of information.
· by achieving the above, move from level A1 to level A2 in terms of the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR).

IV. Class Requirements
· Use only English in class!
· Preview the material for next class! (You are required to spend at least 6 hrs a week on homework and previewing the material)
· You are required to hand in homework before class begins.
· Participate in pair- and group-work activities with other students.
· Negotiations for your course grade are NOT allowed.
· Extra assignments to increase grade are NOT allowed.

Midterm Speaking Test

· Test covers: speaking, reading, vocabulary, grammar, listening, etc. from textbook (all chapters from syllabus), and all assignments including video materials

VII. Writing Assignments
Writing Assignment – Independent Paragraph: Description
· Topic: See below.
· 5% of final grade
· Due: Week 5 Day 1. Returned with feedback: Week 12 Day 2. Must be turned in on time. Late work will not be accepted.
· Half-page, typed, 12 pt. font, double spaced (MS Word) or 180% spaced (HWP)
Choose one of 8 topics.
1. Write a letter of recommendation for a friend who wants a job as a marketing manager.
2. Write a job application letter to an international fast food company.
3. Write a review of an electronic item that you use regularly.
4. Write about your career plans after you leave CAU.
5. Write about the good and bad points of a family member’s job.
6. Write about the career services available at CAU.
7. Write a review of a business that you are familiar with (either as an employee or a customer).
8. Write a letter inviting a business person to a product launch.
VIII. Self Study – Students are expected to study at home using International Express Elementary, the accompanying DVD-ROM and the CEP website (http://escd.yolasite.com). The CEP committee expects 6 hours of self-study per week consisting of the following:
· Preview and review of classes*
· Textbook homework
· DVD-ROM exercises
· CEP website video homework (Teachers will give students a demonstration of how to access the website on the 1st day of class
There will be 2 pop quizzes during the semester:
· Quiz 1 (5%) will be given at some point before Week 8.
· Quiz 2 (5%) will be given at some point before Week 16.
IX. Grading
· Final Written Exam 20%
· Speaking Tests 40% - Midterm Speaking Test (20%) + Final Speaking Test (20%)
· Writing Assignment 5%
· Attendance 10% (5 or more absences = F; 3 late arrivals = 1 absence; more than 20 minutes late = 1 absence)
· Homework 10% (video worksheets, review pages, DVD-ROM & worksheets)
· Pop Quizzes 10% (2 quizzes * 5% each)
· Participation 5% (in-class activities)
