3 / After the iron has been heated to the desired temperature, pick up a strand of hair and comb it smoothly. With the groove on top, insert the iron about 1 inch (2.5 cm) from the scalp, and pull the hair over the rod in the direction of the curl. Hold for a few seconds to form a base. / Burning the client or yourself. / While holding the curl with the curling iron, place the comb between the scalp and the curling iron.
