SWCNA MEETING MINUTES, JUN 6, 2013, HOPE VILLAGE

Present: Richard & Florence Ball, Katie Beck, Stacy Beck, Millie Blodgett, Bob Cornelius, Mike Diggles, Jean Epley, Brian Hodson, Katherine Holt, Mark Jones, Bob Kauffman, Matt Michel, Ken Rider, and Nancy Wilmes.

Chairman Richard Ball called the meeting to order at 7:08pm. He introduced Vice Chairman Mike Diggles, and mentioned that due to illness Secretary Shelley Kadwell was unable to attend. Mike read the minutes of the July 31, 2012 meeting. Matt Michels indicated that the cost of the new water tank was $1.6 million, not 8 million as stated in the minutes. Bob Cornelius moved the minutes be accepted as corrected, Katherine Holt seconded the motion. The motion passed.

Under Old Business, Richard mentioned the success and good turnout present for last October’s mayor debate between Randy Carson and Brian Hodson. It was hosted by Canby’s 4 neighborhood associations at Hope Village. Richard next encouraged residents to participate in Canby’s city planning events. For 4 months, over 100 Canby residents participated in the Canby Visioning Process ( However, for the May 29 “South 13th Pedestrian Study” meeting only 7 South Canby residents were in attendance! Brian Hodson and Ken Rider said they hadn’t seen the survey results since they weren’t yet finalized. They’ll look more into the survey results and get back to us.

Nancy Wilmes of the CERT (Canby Emergency Response Training) team next presented ways for building and strengthening disaster readiness among neighbors. CERT trained individuals are prepared to support local police and the fire department during disaster situations. She distributed several handouts, and mentioned that if 20 SWCNA residents volunteer to be CERT trained, a class for that purpose will be arranged.

Under New Business, our new SWCNA Liaison Councilor, Ken Rider, was introduced. He told us that he’d work to represent us in City Council.

Matt Michel of Canby Utility next did a follow up on the 13th Avenue water tanks. He further discussed the new S. Ivy Street water line project. The cost of that project ran over since the County required a 12’ pavement replacement as opposed to a 5’ replacement. Matt stated that the Molalla River continues to be a good source of water. However, the Willamette River may be considered for future water needs (2020 or beyond). A new substation is being built on Knight Bridge Road.

Shelley Kadwell has indicated that weeds in the ditch along S 13th between Fir St and the East entrance to the Elmwood Mobil Home Park will need to be cut down.

Richard encouraged SWCNA members to assist us in making our SWCNA directory more complete by submiting email addresses for neighbors, etc. These are good to have so we can get prowler alerts, etc out quickly to SWCNA residents. Nancy suggested that “texting” may be a better means of communication. She said that Stephanie Boyce could help us with that.

The next SWCNA meeting will be a potluck picnic/meeting to be held on Sunday, Sept 8, 2013 in the Ball's backyard at 1238 S Cedar Loop. The meeting was adjourned at 8:53pm.

Respectfully submitted,

Florence Ball, Acting Secretary
