Supreme Court Decision Time

You and your partner are attorneys representing a client that wants the Supreme Court to rule either in favor or against a current law. Your firm is going in front of the Supreme Court and the decision the court makes will set a precedent for the entire country. It is extremely important that your firm is prepared to present the issue and back it up with facts and previous legal decisions. You and your partner are responsible for a two-minute briefing that you will present before the court. You will then listen to your opponent’s two-minute argument. After their briefing you will be given 1 minute for a rebuttal as will your opponent. You will also answer any questions the Supreme Court Justices might have. The Supreme Court Justices will then prepare a 1-page opinion paper giving their opinion on the issue; they will present their decision to the class the following day.

What you are responsible for:

Lawyers: 2 minute typed briefing that you are going to present in front of the court. You only need 1 copy for both of you, make sure both of your names are on it. Your grade will be based on your briefing paper and the presentation of it. The law firm that wins the case will receive extra credit.

Justices: You are responsible for listening to both sides of the issue, asking questions of the attorney and writing a one-page paper explaining your position either for the law or against it.
