Preceptor Development:

Support for safe clinical learning

Purpose: The purpose of this activity is to enable learners to apply communication, interpersonal and teaching/learning knowledge, skills and abilities as used to support development and validation of competent performance and clinical judgment in the direct care setting. This educational offering offers a multidisciplinary approach to evidence-based, competence development and validation.

Target Audience: Direct care providers who support orientation, internship, performance evaluation, and/or coaching for students, new grads or other new hires in the healthcare workplace. Academic faculty, managers and educators who use internship, orientation, student clinical &/or preceptor programs in the clinical setting.

Module One – Preparing for the Clinical Coaching Role Independent study Module

This independent study module is sent to registrants to assist with preparation for the core preceptor workshop.

This continuing nursing education activity was approved by the Vermont State Nurses’ Association, Inc., an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission of Accreditation.
5.0 contact hours. Contact hour credit is awarded only for completed worksheets. Approval valid through June 02, 2013. Assigned VSNA # 11-03-001

Module Two – Preceptor Development Course: Support for Safe Clinical Learning

This activity has been submitted to the Vermont State Nurses Association, for approval to award contact hours. The Vermont State Nurses Association’s Committee on Education is accredited as an approver of continuing nursing education by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Committee on Accreditation.

Please contact for more information about contact hours. Contact hour certificates require participation in both days of the course. If unable to attend at initial date, attendance at the second day can be scheduled for another offering. Please note: No approved contact hour certificates for February dates.

This offering seeks to bring about a change in clinical performance. On completion, learners will:

  1. Endorse self-care practices within the clinical setting.
  2. Advocate for the resources needed to support all components of the responsibilities of the preceptor.
  3. Evaluate the competence of the novice in an objective, measurable, and specific manner.
  4. Delegate &/or assign appropriate patients, as determined by scope of practice & capability of the learner.
  5. Provide support for the learner as they transition through the stages of skills development.
  6. Foster critical thinking development in the clinical practice of the student and/or novice that is being precepted.
  7. Develop reflective practice in the novice with the use of individualized clinical coaching plans that adapt to diverse learning styles.
  8. Give and receive feedback using effective verbal and non-verbal communication skills.
  9. Apply core concepts of communication to improve relationships and teamwork.
  10. Strengthen the work team in their support & development of students and new staff members.
  11. Develop solutions for challenging experiences of coaching &/or precepting.
  12. Assemble the foundation for the preceptor/internship programs in your workplace.

Courses run from 8:00 to 4:30 pm each day, unless stated otherwise
