Subject: Safety equipment (lab coats/smocks)

I am wondering if any labs are requiring their technicians to wear lab

coats/smocks.

We at the Oklahoma DOT have been forced to wear aprons. I feel that the

lab coats do a better job protecting the technician. We have some

technicians that prefer the aprons but I prefer the coats. I have been

burnt a number of times on the arm while wearing the apron. They help

protect clothes as well. The lab coats can be dangerous if loose sleeves

get caught in the machinery. We use the Texas gyratory compactor for

regular asphalt hveem mix designs and this has always been a concern to me.

The superpave gyratory compactors (SGC's) are much more safe in this

aspect.

I guess I will be cooler for awhile anyway...

Not requiring coats. Some do wear them, others do not. Not using aprons.

Safety is most important! Require lab coats and safety glasses with side

protection. Gloves are also necessary. Also, lab coats protect the arms

where aprons do not.

At the South Central Superpave Center, we require lab coats. The coats we

use are made by Lab Safety Supply of Janesville, WI. They are 100% cotton

preshrunk. No handling of hot material is allowed unless the person doing

the handling is wearing one of these coats. Obviously, safety glasses and

gloves are required too. Anyone who gets caught violating this rule gets to

spend a couple of weeks shaking aggregate.

We do not require our liquid asphalt testing lab technicians to wear

coats/smocks although coats are provided for optional use. This is also

true of safety glasses.

We do not require lab coats or aprons, but they are available at the

technicians option. If they are used, they use lab coats because it covers

more of their cloths. The technicians do use gloves. There have been no

burns in our lab from asphalt or asphalt products that the addition of lab

coat would have prevented.
