Baby Steps

I was disappointed by the response of Ann Reale, head of the new state Department of Early Education and Care, to Neil Swidey's question about universal preschool ("Nap Czar," August 28). Reale replied, "There will never be enough money to do all the things we would love to do for kids; [we need to] figure out how to make the money we have stretch as far as we can." Under that sort of bake-sale mentality, the children of Massachusetts will never get the help they need. Do you see the Pentagon saying, "There will never be enough money"? Did the folks in charge of the Big Dig concentrate on making "the money we have stretch as far as we can"? We need a commissioner for little people who thinks big. I hope Reale will lead the call for more resources for children - and that the people of Massachusetts will back her up in these demands.
