May 7, 2017

Good Morning and Welcome: We hope your worship this morning will be a good experience for you. Many of those sitting around you were in your position once. They walked through the doors of the church and didn’t know anyone. They felt a little awkward to be in a new place. Yet, they found a home here and we hope that you will too. If you would like information on how to become a member, if you have questions about worship, or if you are just curious, make sure to speak with Pastor Buch as you leave. Please fill out our friendship register so that we have a record of your visit with us. If you have any questions please ask one of the ushers that handed you your worship folder. God’s blessings on your week and we hope to see you again soon!!

Little children are welcome in worship. Children are future pastors, teachers and members of God’s church. They need to meet Jesus and hear his Word too. We have reserved the back row of chairs on the organ side of the church for families with small children. We have a quiet room, located off the narthex, for infants, toddlers and their parents if the children get too active during worship.

Please silence phones during the service. Thanks!!

If you need a large print copy of the bulletin please ask an usher for assistance.

Suggestions Before Worship: Today we celebrate the sacrament of Holy Communion. Holy Communion is not just between us and God, it is also a statement and confession of faith. As we come forward to commune we are stating that we believe and confess the same faith as the other members of our congregation. As we prepare to receive this sacrament it is always good to take a moment of personal preparation and prayer. Personal Preparation for Holy Communion is found on page 156 in the front of the red hymnal.

Confession of Sins

P:Beloved in the Lord: Let us draw near with a true heart and confess our sins to God our Father, asking him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to grant us forgiveness.

C:Holy and merciful Father, I confess that I am by nature sinful and that I have disobeyed you in my thoughts, words, and actions. I have done what is evil and failed to do what is good. For this I deserve your punishment both now and in eternity. But I am truly sorry for my sins, and trusting in my Savior Jesus Christ, I pray: Lord, have mercy on me, a sinner.

P:God, our heavenly Father, has been merciful to us and has given his only Son to be the atoning sacrifice for our sins. Therefore, as a called servant of Christ and by his authority, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son (+) and of the Holy Spirit.

P:In the peace of forgiveness, let us praise the Lord

Prayer Of The Day

P:The Lord be with you.

P:Let us pray.

O Lord Jesus Christ, you are the Good Shepherd who laid down your life for the sheep. Lead us now to the still waters of your life-giving Word that we may abide in your Father’s house forevermore; for you live and reign with him and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

Please be seated for the reading of the lessons.

THE WORD

First Lesson:1 Samuel 17:34-37

David was called the shepherd king. God taught him how to lead people by first teaching him how to lead sheep. David showed his love for his sheep and his trust in God by being willing to defend his sheep no matter what danger was lurking.

34 But David said to Saul, “Your servant has been keeping his father’s sheep. When a lion or a bear came and carried off a sheep from the flock, 35 I went after it, struck it and rescued the sheep from its mouth. When it turned on me, I seized it by its hair, struck it and killed it. 36 Your servant has killed both the lion and the bear; this uncircumcised Philistine will be like one of them, because he has defied the armies of the living God. 37 The Lord who delivered me from the paw of the lion and the paw of the bear will deliver me from the hand of this Philistine.”

Songs And Prayers For Children

These songs and prayers are ones that, for many years, parents and grandparents have taught to their children. We take the time to remember the simple truths that are in these songs that we now teach our children. Please help your children to follow along as we sing these songs that provide the Gospel in a simple way.

I Am Trusting You Lord Jesus

1 I am trusting you, Lord Jesus, Trusting only you,

Trusting you for full salvation, Free and true.

2. I am trusting you to guide me; You alone shall lead

Every day and hour supplying All my need.

3. I am trusting you Lord Jesus; Never let me fall

I am trusting you forever and for all

Let us fold our hands, bow our heads and ask Jesus our loving Savior to hear us as we pray together:

Jesus we pray be with us today. Fill us with love and help us obey.

Love us, O Lord, forgive our sins too, And give us faith to believe in you. Amen

I am Jesus’ Little Lamb

1 I am Jesus’ little lamb;

Ever glad at heart I am,

For my shepherd gently guides me,

Knows my needs and well provides me,

Loves me ev’ry day the same,

Even calls me by my name.

2 Day by day, at home, away,

Jesus is my staff and stay.

When I hunger, Jesus feeds me,

Into pleasant pastures leads me;

When I thirst, he bids me go

Where the quiet waters flow.

3 Who so happy as I am,

Even now the shepherd’s lamb?

And when my short life is ended,

By his angel hosts attended,

He shall fold me to his breast,

There within his arms to rest.

Then he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant, which is poured out for you for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me.”

M:The peace of the Lord be with you always.

C:Amen.

O Christ, Lamb Of God

Please Be Seated for the Distribution of Holy Communion.

Distribution Hymn: 369Beautiful Savior

After distribution of Holy Communion please stand.

M:Let us give thanks to the Lord, our God.

C:It is good and right so to do.

M:It is truly good and right that we should at all times and in all places give you thanks, O Lord, Holy Father, Almighty and Everlasting God, through Jesus Christ our Lord and we praise you especially for the glorious resurrection of your Son, the true Passover Lamb, who, by his sacrifice took away the sins of the world and by his resurrection restored everlasting life. Therefore, with all the saints on earth and hosts of heaven, we praise your holy name and join their glorious song:

Words Of Institution

M:Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night he was betrayed, took bread; and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take and eat; this is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.”

The Second Lesson: 1 Peter 2:19-25

Just as David was willing to sacrifice his own safety to defend the sheep, Jesus gave up his own life to save us, his sheep. The Shepherd laid down his life, by his suffering and death that we might live a new life in him.

9 For it is commendable if a man bears up under the pain of unjust suffering because he is conscious of God. 20 But how is it to your credit if you receive a beating for doing wrong and endure it? But if you suffer for doing good and you endure it, this is commendable before God. 21 To this you were called, because Christ suffered for you, leaving you an example, that you should follow in his steps.

22“He committed no sin, and no deceit was found in his mouth.”

23 When they hurled their insults at him, he did not retaliate; when he suffered, he made no threats. Instead, he entrusted himself to him who judges justly. 24 He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness; by his wounds you have been healed. 25 For you were like sheep going astray, but now you have returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls.

We confess our faith with the words of the Nicene Creed.

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty,

maker of heaven and earth,

of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God,

eternally begotten of the Father,

God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God,

begotten, not made, of one being with the Father.

Through him all things were made.

For us and for our salvation, he came down from heaven,

was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary,

and became fully human.

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate.

He suffered death and was buried.

On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures.

He ascended into heaven

and is seated at the right hand of the Father.

He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead,

and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit,

the Lord, the giver of life,

who proceeds from the Father and the Son,

who in unity with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified,

who has spoken through the prophets.

We believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church.

We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.

We look for the resurrection of the dead

and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Hymn Of The Day: 436Jesus Shepherd of the Sheep

Please rise for the reading of the Gospel, the words and works of our Savior, Jesus.

Sermon Text:John 10:1-10

Sermon Theme: Jesus is the Good Shepherd

“I tell you the truth, the man who does not enter the sheep pen by the gate, but climbs in by some other way, is a thief and a robber. 2 The man who enters by the gate is the shepherd of his sheep. 3 The watchman opens the gate for him, and the sheep listen to his voice. He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. 4 When he has brought out all his own, he goes on ahead of them, and his sheep follow him because they know his voice. 5 But they will never follow a stranger; in fact, they will run away from him because they do not recognize a stranger’s voice.” 6 Jesus used this figure of speech, but they did not understand what he was telling them.
