Filmmaking: An Introduction

June 23-July 11

Grades 9-12 12:30-4:30 Jon Kimmel

Filmmaking focuses on the art and technique of creating short films, from inspiration to production to the final cut. All filming and editing will be done digitally in a small group setting with targeted assignments and guidance, allowing students to develop their own voice and vision. Students will tackle a number of specifically designed assignments to establish their repertoire of technical skills and artistic approaches. Many of these projects are modeled on key facets of famous directors’ styles; for example, using Alfred Hitchcock as an example of emphasizing visual elements over the dialogue to advance the story and control the mood of the film. Students will get plenty of time behind the lens and in the critical role of film editor (when a good film becomes a great one). By the end of the class, each student will have had major responsibility for several films. Experienced and beginning students both will be welcomed and challenged.
