Summer School Student Representative Job Description

Background

The Student Recruitment Team at Newcastle University organises residential Summer Schools to raise the awareness and aspirations of students towards Higher Education.

University Survival Guide is a three day-two night residential for Year 10 (14/15 year old) students and Bitesize Uni is a four day-three night residential for Year 12/first year college students.

The aim is to provide a taste of student life and to help develop the skills necessary for Higher Education. Both events offer a variety of activities based around academic subject taster sessions, study skills, personal skills and team work. All studentstaking part in these events will be resident at Castle Leazes for the duration of the summer schools.

Main purpose of the job

  • To be responsible for a group of up to ten students attending the event
  • To provide support for key Summer School staff
  • To co-ordinate your group and act as a mentor (with another Student Representative) to provide help, support and encouragement to all students
  • To be residential within the Halls of Residence for the duration of the event

Main duties and responsibilities

Please note that the nature of residential events requires all staff to work with initiative and flexibility, and that the following job description should be used as a guide only:

Group Leader

Student Representatives (working in pairs) will be assigned a group of up to ten students who they will work closely with throughout each event. The role of the Student Representative is to:

  • act as a mentor and provide help, support and encouragement to both your group and to all students throughout the Summer School
  • to communicate and work effectively with the Student Representative you are paired with to ensure the smooth running of your group (at times you will have sole responsibility for your group)
  • escort students around the University campus/city to pre-arranged venues for both daytime and/or evening activities
  • co-ordinate the project work for your group and assist and encourage the students with this task
  • be the first point of contact for students if they experience problems with any aspect of the Summer School experience
  • support Summer School staff where appropriate during the event, adapting to and communicating any last minute changes to the timetable or rules/regulations implemented during the Summer School.

Session Delivery

Where appropriate you will be expected to assist as a facilitator/leader in some of the Summer School activities. You will be given more details of these events nearer the time. We welcome your creativity in arranging activities throughout the Summer School.

Informing Summer School Organisers

It is essential that the Summer School organisers are aware of any issues or problems that arise throughout the Summer School. You will need to work as a team to keep us up to date by:

  • attending a staff briefing each day during the Summer School
  • liaising with other Student Reps to provide help and support as appropriate
  • working closely with the Student Rep you are paired with
  • informing Summer School staff as soon as you become aware of any issue that needs addressing
  • being proactive in your approach to managing summer school attendees, using your initiative to assist summer school staff

Attendance

All Student Representatives must attend a training session on Wednesday 10 June, 1.30pm-4.30pm (please let us know if you are unable to attend on this date).

All Student Representatives are required to be residential in Castle Leazes Halls of Residencefor the duration of the event and stay with their group until the event ends

Unless pre-arranged, Student Representatives MUSTremain with their allocated group at all times and/or will be given set duties until 9.30pm or 12am each evening.

OVERALL THE ROLE OF THE STUDENT REPRESENTATIVE IS TO ENSURE THE SMOOTH RUNNING OF THE SUMMER SCHOOL AND THE SAFETY, WELFARE AND HAPPINESS OF ALL STUDENTS AT ALL TIMES.
