All Honors English III students will be required to have read one of the novel listed below:

A Raisin in the Sun by Lorraine Hansberry – students will be responsible for keeping a reading journal that will include the elements identified below. Students will turn this in to their English III teacher the first day full day of school.

  1. Summarize the plot occurrences or ideas in the scene, including how they further the story (Act 1 scene i, Act I scene ii, Act II scene i, Act II scene ii, Act III).
  2. Include one significant quote from each scene that you appreciated, identified with, or recognized as powerful. For each quote, explain why you chose it in a fully developed paragraph.

This year’s essay contest is a bit different. More details can be found in the MTSU Reading Folder - including some important suggestions and guidelines for students to follow when writing their essay.

One essay winner will be selected from EACH Rutherford County High School that participates. These students and their teacher will be invited to meet the author at a luncheon prior to MTSU’s Convocation on Sunday, August 21, 2016. Essays should be mailed or emailed to the C.O. by August 5, 2016, to the attention of Jackie Drake. That information is on the outside of the folder for the students, as well.
