Summer Reading Guidelines for Incoming 5th Graders

A Week in the Woods by Andrew Clements

About Average by Andrew Clements

The Mostly True Adventures of Homer P. Figg by Rodman Philbrick

This summer incoming fifth graders will need to read two of the above book selections. Reading helps keep your child's mind active and it will help them not to lose the momentum of the school year.

You will use one 5x8 index card for one book and follow the directions below for the responses to the book. For your second book, make a poster that includes the information from numbers 1-4 below.

1.  On the lined side of the card, write your name and date on the top line. (Hint: the pink line)

2.  Second line – write the title of the book and author’s name.

3.  Next few lines name two characters and give a brief description of who they are.

4.  Finally write three complete sentences summarizing what the book is about. Include capital letters and punctuation.

5.  On the unlined side of the paper, draw a picture of a scene from the book that shows something important that happened.

6.  Leave about a half inch space at the bottom of the card to write two sentences of “Why I chose this picture scene” statement.

7.  The picture needs to be colored using colored pencils only. Be sure to use as much color as possible. No crayons or markers.

8.  Your penmanship needs to be neat (print only) and your picture needs to be neat and show effort. Use only the space provided on the card. No extra paper please.

Each card will be graded according to the above guidelines. Be ready to take AR test for each book to jumpstart your AR goals!!

Happy Reading!!!!!
