Position Description

Job Title: Costume Designer

Summary: Responsible for the design, construction, maintenance, rental, and coordination of costume garments used for productions by performing the following duties.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following: Other duties may be assigned.

Talks to Director and other interested parties to determine costume needs, date needed, quantities, styles, colors, and sizes.

Takes cast measurements, builds costumes, pulls garments and accessories, and fits cast members.

Organizes, maintains, and catalogs garments, accessories, sewing material, and patterns.

Examines garments for damages, and designates garments for cleaning, alterations, or repair.

Receives, organizes, stock and/or disposes of donated garments, accessories, sewing material, and patterns.

Creates inventory of costume garments for rental. Shows rental customers available or appropriate garments. Reserves garments selected.

Packages garments and accessories selected by rental customers and places in protective bag or box. Obtains suitable identification and/or deposit as security from rental customer. Computes rental charge for garments and maintains record of payment and receipts. Inspects garments for damage upon return, and designates garments for cleaning or repair.

Assists guest costume designers of productions by providing input on costume and accessory stock, pulling garments and accessories, and helping fit cast members.

Maintains sewing machines and other sewing equipment and material.

Repairs, alters, and constructs costumes as required.

Education and /or Experience:

Bachelor’s degree (BA) in Theatre Arts – Costumes from four-year college or university; or one to two years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience in costume design and execution.

Language Skills:

Ability to read and interpret documents such as patterns, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers, employees, or theatre adult/children casts members.

Reasoning Ability:

Ability to apply commonsense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or verbal instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations. Ability to project revenue/expense variable associated with costumes and accessories.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, and carry objects up and down stairways and from building to building.

The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and color differentiation. Individual must be able to differentiate texture.
