STOW, OH, November 29, 2007 — Front of House (FOH) engineer John Kerns is enthusiastic about his use of Audio-Technica microphones while working as FOH engineer on Canadian alternative rock band Sum 41’s recent Strength in Numbers Tour. Kerns, whose résumé boasts work with No Doubt, Bruce Springsteen, Shania Twain, Sammy Hagar, Styx, Ringo Starr and Stevie Nicks, began using Audio-Technica microphones as FOH engineer for No Doubt on their 2002-2003 tour. Since then, Audio-Technica has become indispensable to his craft. Reflecting on A-T products’ performance, Kerns says simply: “They have consistency and they sound good. That’s really what it’s all about. When I stick ‘em up there, I know what I’m in for.”

Sum 41’s high-volume, high-energy live show would pose challenges for any FOH engineer. Kerns remarks, “They’re all great musicians, but it’s busy and it’s loud. The hardest part is trying to keep definition between things.” Rising to the challenges Sum 41’s music presents, Kerns is meticulous in his mic choice. He uses AE6100’s and AE4100’s for vocals, ATM25 on the kick drum, AE3000’s on toms, ATM450 on hi-hat, AT4047’s on guitarcabinets, AT4050’s for overheads and ATM650’s, his newest favorite, for a number of applications: cabinets, guitars and snares. “With everything I’ve put the ATM650 on, it’s been great. I’m using it for dirty guitars, clean guitars, andsnares. In my opinion, it sounds a lot better than the competition’s industry standard – much more consistent, and it doesn’t have that proximity effect.” He is also particularly fond of the ATM450. “I like the 450 also. The side-address is great—I can get it where I want it.”

Kerns also appreciates Audio-Technica’s customer focus: “The customer service is second to none. Audio-Technica actually answers phone calls and emails. There’s a lot of other companies that don’t.”
