In Search of Ho Chi Minh: Things We Should Have Known

"Putting Vietnam in the Vietnam War: A Commemoration of the 40th Anniversary of the Michigan Teach-Ins Against the Vietnam War" seeks to continue the original purpose of the teach-ins: to give U-M students and the community at large information and historical context for the Vietnamese experience of the war in the 20th century. Prof. Quinn-Judge's talk will focus on perceptions of Ho Chi Minh in the colonial period, how our focus was blurred by later events, how he covered his traces, and how his image was re-created in the '50s and '60s.

David Elliott will speak about American knowledge of Vietnam in the 1960s. Mai Elliott will discuss how the war in Vietnam ripped apart the Vietnamese middle class.

"Putting Vietnam in the Vietnam War: A Commemoration of the 40th Anniversary of the Michigan Teach-Ins Against the Vietnam War" seeks to continue the original purpose of the teach-ins: to give U-M students and the community at large information and historical context for the Vietnamese experience of the war in the 20th century. Bruce Weigl is a poet much of whose work stems from his service in Vietnam. He is also a leading translator of poetry by Vietnamese soldiers he once fought against.

"Putting Vietnam in the Vietnam War: A Commemoration of the 40th Anniversary of the Michigan Teach-Ins Against the Vietnam War" seeks to continue the original purpose of the teach-ins: to give U-M students and the community at large information and historical context for the Vietnamese experience of the war in the 20th century. Dick Mann was the central organizer of the Teach-Ins at Michigan. He will share his reflections on the University and the nation in 1965 and today, followed by audience discussion.
