TIELA: Good evening, everyone. My name isTiela Chalmers, and I’m the CEO of the Alameda County Bar Association, and VLSC. It is good to see so many of you here, both new and familiar faces. Welcome to the ACBA’s 2018 Installation and Distinguished Service Awards Dinner. We are proud each year to offer hundreds of educational programs, social and networking events, and leadership opportunities for the legal community. Incubator, new attorney boot camp, monthly socials, online CLE and client recruitment tools, etc. You’ll hear more about the work of the ACBA and its members throughout tonight’s program.

TIELA: And now it is my pleasure to introduce to you ACBA President-Elect Cheryl Poncini, who will recognize the dignitaries who are present. Cheryl is a Deputy District Attorney in the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office, where she is currently assigned to the Elder and Dependent Adult Protection Unit. Cheryl is a graduate of Santa Clara University School of Law, and received her Master of Public Administration degree from CSU East Bay in March 2013. She is also a member of the VLSC Board of Directors.

CHERYL: and now I’d like to introduce Alameda County Superior Court Presiding Judge Wynne Carvill. JudgeCarvill was appointed to the Alameda County Superior Court in 2003. He currently presides over a civil department, and also serves as a settlement officer in family law cases. He has also presided over criminal law and family law calendars. Prior to becoming a judge, Judge Carvill was a business litigator and partner at the firm formerly known as Thelen Reid Brown Raysman & Steiner. Judge Carvill received a bachelor’s degree from Williams College and his Juris Doctorate from Harvard University and is obviously a real slouch

Please join me in welcoming and congratulating the 2018 ACBA Board of Directors. It is my pleasure to introduce incoming ACBA President, Michael Johnson. Michael is an Executive Director and Senior Legal Counsel with AT&T Services Inc. in San Ramon, specializing in healthcare and governmental contracting issues. A former business lawyer and civil litigator, he is also a formerPresident of the VLSC Board of Directors.

MICHAEL: I’d like to say a few words about our wonderful 2017 ACBA President, Eric Handler. Under hisbold leadership, Eric has ushered ACBA into a new era celebrating 140 years of service to our community. This year, he helped begin the FREE CLEs for ACBA members and free legal research through a partnership with Fastcase. Thank you for your service, Eric!

MICHAEL: It is my privilege to present the 2018 Distinguished Service Awards. First, the Judge of the Year award this year goes to a jurist who has made access to justice a priority throughout her career. Judge Tara Desautels(DAY-SAW-TELLS) started her career as a Deputy District Attorney at the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office, and was selected to serve as a member of the felony Child Sexual Assault team, and as a mentor with the California District Attorneys Association. Judge Desaultels is a strong advocate for women and children. She was appointed to the bench in 2010 and has served in criminal, family law and juvenile assignments since that time, and on the Court’s Executive Committee since 2015. She has been active on the ACBA’s Judicial Liaison Committee, as well, working to build even stronger bonds between bench and bar. Thank you, and Congratulations , Judge Desautels!

MICHAEL: The award for Attorney of the Year goes to someone is a dedicated member of the Alameda County legal committee. Michael Shklovsky(SHLOV-SKI), of Anderson Zeigler, represents both plaintiffs and defendants in business, employment, real estate and intellectual property disputes.Michael is actively involved in the Bay Area legal community. He regularly teaches MCLE classes on the mechanics of civil litigation to less experienced attorneys. Since 2014, Michael has served as the Chair of the Alameda County Bar Association’s Trial Practice Section. In October of 2016, Michael was appointed to the Business Litigation Committee of the Business Law Section of the California State Bar Association.He remains active in the ACBA despite having moved to Petaluma! Thank you for your service to our community Michael.

MICHAEL: Now we come to the Law Firm of the Year award. The Oakland City Attorney’s Office works to proactively address key community issues like health and well-being issues and protecting and advancing the rights and interests of Oakland residents with a goal of economic, environmental, and social justice. The City Attorney’s Office has long been supportive of and active in the Alameda County Bar Association, and their overwhelming participation and leadership has helped to advance the mission and core values of the ACBA. Please help me welcomeOakland City Attorney Barbara Parker who will be accepting this award on behalf of the Oakland City Attorney’s Office.

MICHAEL: Our next award goes to our Barrister, or newer lawyer, of the year. An active and engaged member of the ACBA,earned her JD at the University of California, Davis School of Law (King Hall). Alice has been practicing family law for some time, and now does so with theLaw Offices of Tracey C. Wapnick. Alice Cheng also worked as a deputy district attorney at the Sacramento County District Attorney's Office, where she completed eight criminal jury trials and numerous bench trialsandpreliminary hearings, Alice works incredibly hard for the ACBA, whether she is conceptualizing new approaches to mentorship, or chopping up lettuce for the Oakland A’s tailgate. Alice is the 2017-2018 Chair of the ACBA Barristers Section, and serves on the ACBA Board as an ex-officio member.

MICHAEL: our final award of the evening goes to the Community Organization of the Year. Social Justice Collaborative. TheSocial Justice Collaborativeis a legal nonprofit 501(c)(3) agency that provides deportation and related criminal defense services to low-income non-citizens of the United States.The Social Justice Collaborative was founded byGautam Jagannath(GOW-TAHM JAG-AH-NAUT) in early 2013 with the goal of alleviating the lack of access to legal services for low-income non-citizens. Gautam has also been instrumental in last year’s launch of our new Immigration Section.

MICHAEL: Congratulations to all of the Distinguished Service Award recipients. This evening, I’m excited to introduce civil rights advocateDru Ramey as our featured speaker. She is the former executive director of the National Association of Women Judges and former executive director and general counsel of the Bar Association of San Francisco, as well as a former tenured member of the GGU School of Law faculty.DruRamey's career has been devoted to the achievement of equal opportunity and access in the justice system. She has chaired the ACLU of Northern California and the San Francisco Commission on the Status of Women and served as a co-founder and board leader of a wide variety of groups devoted to diversity and equality, including California Women Lawyers, the California Minority Counsel Program, and the Immigrant Legal Resource Center. She received her BA magna cum laude from Harvard University and her JD from Yale Law School. Another slouch
