Suggested Route for Practical Assessment:

Meet client in lobby with scooter.Familiarise client with scooter and controls prior to initiating session. Provide the following instructions, only moving on to the next instruction if the client is able to complete each activity successfully and safely.

Instructions for client:

  • Transfer on to scooter and insert key for start. Ensure speed settings appropriate.
  • Drive out automatic door (North West doors on ground floor).
  • Drive along path past kiosk.

Therapist: Select a level area for completion of basic driving skills and set up 2 orange cones.

Instructions for client:

  • Complete basic driving skills assessment including: Figure 8’s, U-turn, 3-point turn, reversing and going forward in a straight line, reversing through cones at an angle and driving forward through cones.
  • Head further on to the lawn area and continue on to uneven areas of grass to practise driving over uneven terrain, dirt/gravel, slopes and problem solving obstacles such as tree roots.
  • Travel along the concrete path and complete a 3 point turn, ensuring the scooter remains entirely on the path at all times.
  • Continue along the concrete path, and enter the car park.
  • Complete a lap of the car park (Therapist to closely monitor to ensure the client is problem solving safety issues and demonstrating adequate traffic awareness).

Therapist: If basic driving skills passed safely, continue with assessment of skills in local community. Instructions for client:

  • Exit the car park via the main pedestrian path to Fisher St.
  • Turn right and head east along the path on Fisher St towards Fullarton Rd.
  • Cross Fisher St at marked pedestrian curb ramps.
  • Turn right onto path and continue to head towards Fullarton Rd(Therapist to monitor client’s ability to manage uneven nature of path and obstacles along path such as bins and branches).
  • Stop at lights at Fullarton Rd and use pedestrian buttons to cross Fullarton road traffic lights towards Caltex petrol station.
  • Then turn right and use pedestrian buttons to cross Fisher St.
  • Turn right again and use pedestrian buttons to cross back over Fullarton Rd.
  • Head back toward HighgatePark along path on Fisher St.
  • Travel along footpath and cross over Roseberry Ave
  • Travel along footpath and cross over Staunton Ave
  • Travel along footpath and cross over Highgate St.
  • Continue along footpath and turn left at main pedestrian access.
  • Follow path back past kiosk to main door on ground floor.
  • Finish outside main door, remove keys, transfer off and walk around.
  • Cease assessment.

NB: If client to use scooter to access public transport, a separate session may be required trialling use of scooter to and from train station etc. This should be completed only if the client has completed the above assessment successfully.
