KY Chapter I.C.E.S. Meeting Minutes – Sunday, July 17, 2016

The meeting was called to order at 10:45 by State Rep, Brenda Harrington who greeted ICES members with a warm welcome. Each participant introduced themselves and a new guest Mandy Curto was recognized. Brenda thanked Susan Zugehoer and Nancy Snodgrass for allowing us to conduct our meeting at Fantasy and Frosting in Newport. A catered lunch was served by the hosts.

The minutes from July 2016 are available for review on the KY ICES website. Motion to accept the minutes as written by Debbie Woodruff and second by Carolyn Cole. All approved.

Treasurer’s report: Submitted by Debbie Woodruff available upon request from Secretary Ellen White.

Old Business:

·  Update on hands on class in April by Glenn Riggs, ICES member who presented a 2 day class on Buttercream flowers, there were 8 in attendance.

·  Convention 2016: See ICES.org website for all details. Brenda had available proxy voting slips for those who could not attend the convention but would like to vote.

If there were any cakes for display for the convention, contact Brenda this week. She will take to the convention.

Suggestions were made for membership or convention ideas: Move the date up due to school starting in August.

New Business:

·  Website: Bluehost renewal was due for 3 years for $395.64 with a free domain. Motion to continue with Bluehost by Carolyn Cole and Second by Ellen White, all approved.

·  Vote to change the October DOS from October 16 to October 23, 2016 due to scheduling of class. Motion by Leigh Sipe and second by Debbie Woodriff, all approved.

·  Upcoming Classes: Meghan Smith (Doodlebug Cakes) in Berea will be teaching a class in October 2016. The exact details of the class are not finalized. Meghan was a recent winner in January on the TV show, Cake Wars. She also did some cakes in the Louisiana Cake show that Brenda attended and won several awards there also. The class and DOS will be held in Winchester. The group decided upon model figurines (not copywrited) of people and animals. As soon as details are finalized, flyers and updates will be sent out.

Ruth Rickey is on the schedule for October 15, 2017. We are looking for a class for April and asked for suggestions.

·  Discussion of a FACEBOOK page for KY ICES. Brenda has contacted Candace who does our website, but she is out of the office and will get back to us with a price quote. It was agreed that a dedicated person needed to be assigned to monitor it daily for questions, replies needed, updates on classes, pictures, etc. The consensus was to pursue the Facebook page.

·  Pictures: Brenda has asked for members to send pictures of new cakes to Ellen White, so that our KY.com website could be updated.

·  Upcoming DOS 2017: Carolyn Cole and Debbie Woodruff agreed to host the January 2017 DOS.

·  Scholarship Draw: Drawing of ICES members in attendance for the next class in October, Susan Zugehoer was the winner.

Demonstrations:

Ann Morgan – presented a short demonstration on how to ice and border a cake quickly. She demonstrated her technique on a simple border with flower and writing. The cake was enjoyed for dessert! She also gave us several tips on flavors and what she does on short notice cakes.

Brenda Meyers – presented a short demonstration of stencils and how to create your own from the products to purchase and the tools to use to cut the stencil. She entertained the members present by allowing us to take turns to help in cutting out a stencil to get the feel of the project. She offered her tips on applying the stencil to the cakes.

Leigh Sipe – presented a short demonstration on how to build a fondant ruffled cake. She demonstrated the procedure on a dummy cake. She supplied each member with a diagram and picture of how to do with a cake she completed. She also demonstrated several tips for borders and cake ruffles.
