Introduction on Animal Husbandry System of the District.

Animal Husbandry Department plays an important role in up-liftment of the economic status of the rural and urban people. The department is implementing different Animal Husbandry programmes like Feeding, Breeding, Management as well as Marketing in scientific methods, in order to safe-guard the livestock and poultry from different diseases and to provide better health coverage and breeding facilities. The aim of this department is to increase livestock production and productivity in terms of milk, meat and egg to meet the demand of the people and to generate self employment for rural youths under employment mission programme.

Angul District came into existence as separate district consequence upon reorganization of district in Orissa on 1st April 1993.The district is surrounded by Cuttack & Dhenkanal in the east .Sambalpur & Deogarh in west, Sundargarh & Keonjhar in the north and Phulabani in the south. There are 16 Vety Hospitals/Dispensaries and 78 Livestock Aid Centres functioning under this department and these Veterinary Institutions are providing services to livestock. The diary and the poultry activities are being accelerated with a view to increase livestock productivity and generating self employment for the rural youths. There is one Poultry Farm and one Fodder Seed Farms functioning in the District. NPCBB, a Government of India sponsored scheme is strengthening and stream-lining the crossbreeding activities in the District and ASCAD and NPRE schemes are taking care of disease control measures. There are 8 administrative blocks and 4 Sub-Divisions in the district. There are 209 Gram Panchayats with more than 1700 revenue villages in the district. Pallahara and Athamallick sub-division are the thrust area of the department for sheep and goat production where as Angul and Talcher area are for dairy and poultry production. On analyzing the livestock population in Angul district it is found that major part of the livestock population constitutes indigenous cattle. Whereas, crossbred cattle constitutes only a small part of this population. Majority of the present cattle population needs replacement as crossbred cattle to enhance milk production. The livestock position of the district is comparatively better than the state average as based on Statistical Abstract of Orissa: 2008.

In Angul, production of goat meat is higher than the state average whereas in case of production of milk and eggs, it is lagging behind. Decreasing pasture lands, lack of will power, low profitability, increasing cost of production and shift of attention towards other enterprises and occupations are some of the factors responsible for less scope of increase in cattle population whereas in case of goatery the future seems bright

Animal Husbandry Status:

There is high demand of Livestock products in the district from high income groups where as the production is much below than the district requirement. The production and productivity of animal products are indicated in the following tables.

The artificial Insemination facility both at HQ and Doorstep is available in our district in 16 VDs, 76 LACs and 61 Gomitra centres.

GOMITRA, the Private AI worker, under this project has been created to perform various departmental activities including Door step AI. The un-employed youths are being trained and supplied with equipments to perform Animal Husbandry activities by which they are self-employed and generate some income for their livelihood.
