Northeast College Preparatory School Lesson Plan
Teacher(s): _Mr. Launhardt
Grade: ___7th grade______
Subject(s): __7th grade math____operations on integers Date of delivery: Thurs 9/27/12
Common Core Learning Standards Addressed:
7.NS.1: Apply and extend previous understandings of addition and subtraction to add and subtract rational numbers; represent addition and subtraction on a horizontal or vertical number line diagram.
7.NS.1d: Apply properties of operations as strategies to add and subtract rational numbers.
7.NS.2: Apply and extend previous understanding of multiplication and division
7.NS.2c: Apply properties of operations as strategies to multiply and divide rational numbers.
7NS.3: Solve real world and mathematical problems involving the four operations with rational numbers.
SLO
Students will have a better understanding of how to use the operations when dealing with integers.
Essential Question(s)/Guiding Question
How can you make valid generalizations about the effect of operations on integers?
Higher Level Thinking Questions to be used during the lesson:
In the work period they will use higher level thinking when applying operations to the problems they will be dealing with.
Bridge/Connection/Hook:
Simplify and evaluate each expression
1) 43 + -56 =
2) 17- (-22) =
3) (5)(-6)(2) =
4) 4•-7-2 =
Materials/Resources/Technology Integration:
Work book handouts
Mini Lesson/Process/Procedure:
Answer questions on homework from day before.
Review rules for operations with integers:
Adding Subtracting Multiply Divide
Work Time/Activities/Task:
Have a review game with students answering questions around the room on all operations dealing with integers.
Summary:
Share out strategies from the work period and pose the essential questions:
How can you make valid generalizations about the effect of operations on integers?
Closure: The most extreme temperature change in Canadian history occurred when the temperature in Pincher Creek, Alberta, rose from –19°C to 22°C in one hour. Find the change in temperature
Access for All: Questions on homework will be addressed the next day in class to encourage them how to answer the questions.
Homework: worksheet from Handout on multiply and divide integers
Formative Assessment: Making sure that the students grasp the concept by answering the summary and closure.
Adjustments that will be made for student success: Go over the homework the next day and make sure the students understand how to explain the higher level questions by leading them with guided questions to answer them.
