10 minutes – Warm-up / Students will write their homework in their planners. After they have written their homework in their planners they will complete the “Before Reading” column of the chart below by responding to the statements in the middle column.

5 Minutes-Review and Connecting Lesson to Previous / Together we will discuss briefly All Summer in a Day. I will remind students about the elements of fiction (setting, conflict, characters) that we have learned previously and how they are used in the story. As a class we’ll discuss the setting of All Summer in a Day, we’ll talk about what would it really be like to live in a space colony? What would it be like to really live on Venus? I will remind students of the reasons we read nonfiction, to gain information. I will tell them how today we’re going to find out actual scientific facts about the setting from All Summer in a Day.
5-Minutes-Background Info and “Hook” / Together we will watch a brief video on the planet Venus from Discovery Education / Discovery Education Video:

15 Minutes- Guided Practice / We will read the first article together. After we finish reading we will discuss the main idea of the article and the details that support that idea. I will model main idea for the students by showing them where I found my answers and explaining how they contribute to the main idea. / Main Idea/Supporting Detail Chart Worksheet

15 Minutes-Making Connections, Synthesizing, and Analyzing / Students will complete a ticket out the door in which they respond to the following questions:
*What do you imagine would be the greatest difference between life in a space colony and life on Earth?

*What lesson might people on Earth take from the way life will be lived in a space colony?
*Knowing what you now know about Venus, what advice would you give to Margot from All Summer in a Day. / Exit Ticket
5-Minutes -Closure / Students will go back to their daybooks and fill in the “After Reading” chart / Daybook
5-Minutes-Packup / *Students will packup, double check to make sure their homework is written in their planners and be ready to hand me their exit ticket on their way out of the door.
