NEW since Autumn 2005

The Department of Mathematical Information Technology was one of the first departments that adopted the European two-tier degree system in autumn 2002. In autumn 2005 a new study credit system was adopted, where ECTS study credits are used instead of the formerly used Finnish study credit units. Furthermore the scale for grading the examinations is now from 1 to 5 (see also Examination regulations). The changes affect mainly new students at this stage. Further information about these changes and the new degree system are available on the pages of the Faculty of Information Technology.

Another new issue since autumn 2005 is a HOPS or Individual Study Plan for each student. In the past, HOPS were made only in certain cases where the students in question had previous corresponding studies. New students will create their HOPS with the help of tutors. Old students can either make their HOPS on their own in the Organizing your studies section of the Korppi system or with the help of student counsellors.

For New Students

Welcome to the Department of Mathematical Information Technology!

On these pages you will find information about starting your studies of mathematical information technology. Since the university is a new and unfamiliar environment for many of you, you might want to start by familiarizing yourself with the study environment. It is worthwhile to get acquainted beforehand with the new issues that entering the university brings about. But don't worry; a senior student called a tutor will help you with all your questions during the first few weeks.

For many of you, the biggest change is probably the fact that at the university you can choose quite freely by yourself what to study and when. Furthermore, you are personally responsible for your studies. But life is not just about studying, so it is recommended to leave some free time in your schedule.

General Information about Studying

The university is in a state of change. Changing over to the new two-tier degree system involves changes that preoccupy both staff and students. On the other hand, the university has always been changing. People change - new students come and old ones leave.

We know from experience that change brings along questions. We hope these pages provide answers to your questions. See also the pages of the Faculty of IT.

From Bachelor Studies to Master Studies

Once the students have completed their Bachelor's degree, they will choose among different alternatives for their Master studies. The bachelor studies contain study modules that are prerequisites to certain alternatives in Master studies. These study modules are mentioned under the alternatives in question.

About Master Studies

After Bachelor studies you can choose between four different lines of study for your Master's degree:

·  Mobile Systems (MOB)

·  Teacher Education (OPE)

·  Software Engineering (OT)

·  Simulation and optimization (SIMO)

The Software Engineering line of study is given in collaboration with the Department of Computer Science and Information Systems.

The descriptions of Master studies at the Department of Mathematical Information Technology mention the prerequisites of each line of study. It is also indicated which courses can be accepted as optional advanced studies. The professor in charge of a line of study can also exceptionally accept other courses as optional advanced studies.

Post-graduate Students

If you want something more, you have come to the right place. If you are not satisfied with a mere Master's degree, you should consider post-graduate studies. Maybe a while ago you didn't imagine continuing your studies beyond a Master's degree, but you will be surprised to see how easy it is to enter the exciting world of post-graduate studies.

More practical information about how to become a post-graduate student and what post-graduate studies require can be found on the pages of the Faculty of Information Technology.

Complementary Studies

Students who already have a Master's Degree at the University of Jyväskylä can continue completing their studies, to finish for example an unfinished study module, by registering for this purpose according to the rules of the university. These studies are free of charge for the time being. The studies take place as normal day time studies.

Further information is available on the pages of the Faculty of Information Technology.

Mathematical Information Technology as a Minor Subject

Information technology plays an important role in many fields of work. It is useful for students from any faculty, which is why mathematical information technology can be studied as a minor subject. The Faculty of Information Technology offers a few different minor subject curricula. Among others, it is possible to choose the basic and subject studies in mathematical information technology as a minor subject. Further information about different study modules and applying minor subjects can be found in the study guide of the faculty.

FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions

On this page you will find answers to frequently asked questions. If you cannot find an answer to your question, please contact the amanuensis of the department.

I have found a company willing to fund my Master's Thesis. Can I start writing it?

No. Nobody outside the Department of Mathematical Information Technology has the right to confirm the choice of subject for the Master's Thesis or give a permission to start writing it. As a student you can suggest a subject, but only a teacher or a researcher of the Department can be the responsible tutor. Further information about theses.

I forgot to enter for an examination. What can I do?

Contact the secretariat of the Department of Mathematical Information Technology and ask if any other students are taking the same examination. If this is the case and the questions have not yet been copied, the secretary might let you participate. Otherwise you cannot come to the examination.

Can I take courses even if I am not a regular student?

Yes. Anybody can take separate study modules by paying the fee according to the current tariff, provided that there is room in the class. You must always apply for a separate right to study from the faculty using a specific application form. You should also check beforehand with the teacher in question whether you can take the study module.

When can one apply for the pedagogical studies for subject teachers?

The application period is in March or April every year. For more information, see the Subject Teacher Education line of study.

I already have a Master's Degree. Can I study mathematical information technology at the University of Jyväskylä?

Yes, you can. There are three alternatives:

1.  If your current degree was taken at the University of Jyväskylä: you can register for completing your degree and take courses with regular students. All students of the University of Jyväskylä have the right to take the basic and subject studies. Students in the field of mathematics have the right to take advanced studies automatically; students in other fields must apply for the right to study using a free-form application addressed at the faculty.

2.  If your current degree was taken at another university and you wish to take a separate degree in mathematical information technology: apply for a separate right to study at the faculty by using the application form for extra students. A payment confirmed by the university is required for these studies. You can ask for compensation for your former studies in the field of information technology.

3.  Master Studies: the faculty of Information Technology selects students separately for Master Studies. You will take courses along with regular students, following your personal study plan. With Master Studies, you will achieve a Master's Degree in science.
