Study information Sheet

Study Title: Resident knowledge and attitudes concerning the JNC-VI and NCEP III clinical practice guidelines.

Principal Investigator: Paul Echlin M.D.

Purpose: Each resident is being asked to participate in a research study regarding the use and understanding of two commonly used clinical practice guidelines JNC VI (hypertension) and NECP III (hyperlipidemia). The main objective is to help the resident physician understand the importance of the clinical practice guideline, and increase their use by increasing accessibility. The information collected will be used to measure whether increased accessibility to the clinical practice guidelines increased resident knowledge base, and whether this intervention changed attitudes concerning utilization of these guidelines.

Procedure: Each resident will be asked to complete a confidential multiple choice testprior to the implementation of the study intervention. An identical multiple choice test will be given to each resident at the end of the intervention period. The intervention will consist of the placement of colored JNC-VI and NCEP III guideline reminders in each adult chart in both the Detroit and Huron Valley Family Practice clinics. Personal copies of each guideline will be distributed to each resident, and bound copies of the guidelines will be placed at the preceptor’s station at both facilities.

Voluntary Participation: Your participation will be entirely voluntary. Filling out the questionnaire constitutes your consent to participate.

Confidentiality: All information about you will be treated with strict confidence. Your name will not be collected. All reports of the findings will be published in aggregate data only.

Risks and Benefits: There are no risks. Potential benefits include a better understanding of the importance of current clinical practice guidelines, and the benefit of their increased accessibility.

Compensation: There is neither cost nor compensation. It is highly unlikely that the resident will be injured as a result of taking part in this study. If this is the case, Wayne State University/Detroit Medical Center/University Family Physicians waive all responsibilities.
