Where the Red Fern Grows

- Personification
- Alliteration
- Simile
- Allusion

- Reading page 6 over will truly help you! Review the notes and partner worksheet that we completed in class identifying examples of figurative language (personification, alliteration, similes, and allusions)
- Be able to provide your own example of personification, simile, and alliteration in your writing.
- Be sure to know about Billy’s relationship with his family. How do we know Billy’s is committed to his family? What does he do for them?What does this reveal about Billy’s character?
- This reveals Billy is loving and caring towards his family members. Billy could have spent the money on material items for himself, but he decided to spend the money on his family instead. This shows us that Billy is selfless. Billy decided to put his family first.
- KNOW:
- Definition of “perseverance”. How does Billy demonstrate perseverance?
- (noun) Steady persistence in a course of action, a purpose, a mindset etc., especially in spite of difficulties, obstacles, or discouragement.
- Definition of “determination” How is Billy determined to get his puppies?
- In the text, Billy explains that Grandpa stated, “ ‘Well,’ he said, ‘the first thing we have to do is write this outfit. There may not even be a place like this in Kentucky any more. After all, a lot of things can happen in two years.’ Seeing that I was worried, he said, ‘Now you go on home. I'll write to these kennels and I'll let you know when I get an answer. If we can't get the dogs there, we can get them someplace else. And I don't think, if I were you, I'd let my Pa know anything about this right now. I happen to know he wants to buy that red mule from Old Man Potter.’ “
- Why do you think Grandpa wanted to keep this information from Papa?
