RAMADHAN SPECIAL PROGRAM DETAILS

NOTE:SABA is undertaking a series of very bold, exciting and fun filled programs for the Ramadhan weekends. Many volunteers are putting in a lot of effort to organize these programs. The success of these programs will be dependent on your participation. We expect all community members including their families to come forward, to participate wholeheartedly, and to make these events a success. In addition to the main hall, SABA is arranging for two adjoining trailers to conduct these events. Special programs will take place after the regular programs on Friday and Saturday nights. Participants in all special programs will be treated to yummy snacks at the end of each program!

I.Quran Memorization Competition: (Children through Adults)

  1. All age groups can participate, young children through adults.
  2. Sunday school students of SABA and/or Sunday School parents can register during Sunday school, with their teachers or administrators.
  3. Non Sunday school children, teenagers, and adults can register at SABA, call in, or send us e-mail. Sign-up sheets will be posted in SABA.
  4. Following suras have been identified for various age groups, Grade levels reflected are pertaining to Sunday school class grades. Age groups are also identified for non-Sunday school students:

Grade 1: al-Fatiha (1), al-Asr (103), al-Ikhlas (112) (Ages 5 to 6)

Grade 2: al-Qadr (97), al-Nas (114) (Ages 6 to 7)

Grade 3: al-Teen (95), al-Nasr (110) (Ages 7 to 8)

Grade 4: al-Kawthar (108), Ayat al-Kursi (2:255 - 257) (Ages 8 to 9)

Grade 5: al-Shams (91), al-Falaq (113) (Ages 9 to 10)

Grade 6: al-Inshira (94), al-A`ala (87) (Ages 10 to 11)

Grade 7: al-Zalzala (99), al-Duha (93) (Ages 11 to 12)

Grade 8: al-Layl (92), al-Kafiroon (109) (Ages 12 to 13)

Grade 9-10: al-Jumuah (62) (Ages 14 to 18)

Grade 11 and up: al-Fajr (89) (Adults)

5.Participants can download these suras directly from the Internet ( Cassettes/CD’s will also be available for all suras at SABA. Sunday school children will be provided with CD’s during class on Sunday, November 10th.

6.Sunday school students will be tested in front of a panel of judges during Sunday School on Sunday, December 1st. (Note: Sunday school timing has been changed to evenings during Ramadhan)

7.Non Sunday school children should try to come to SABA during Sunday school hours for testing, or, they should contact the organizers for special arrangements.

8.Adults will be tested by Maulana Abidi during regular SABA programs.

10.Winners will be selected in each age category and recognized during the SABA Eid Celebration Day. Winners will be notified before Eid day and they will have the option to recite in front of the community during the Eid Celebration.

11. Participants will be judged on the following criteria:

a) Knowledge of verses by memory

b) Correctness of recitation

c) Style of recitation

Additionally, participants in grades 6 and above will be asked to give a summary of the meaning of the surah.

II. Qur’an Recitation Competition (Children Through Adults)

Age groups:

Young Children: Up to and including age 10 (2 groups: boys and girls)

Children: Ages 11-15 (2 groups: boys and girls)

Adults: Ages 16 and above (2 groups: men and women)

1. On the last Friday night of the month of Ramadhan, participants in each category will be given a chance to recite in front of the community (men and women will be separate).

2. The recitation will consist of a few verses from a surah chosen by the panel of judges at the time of the recitation.

3. Participants will be judged based on:

a) Correctness of recitation

b) Style of recitation

c) Effort in improvement over the course of the month of Ramadhan (this will be subjective based on participation in General Qur'an Recitation).

4. All participants will receive a small gift to recognize their participation and as a means of encouragement. A few reciters in each category will be recognized for superb recitation but no special prizes will be awarded to winners.

5. All community members (not only the participants) are encouraged to attend this event to hear beautiful recitation of the Qur'an.

6. Participants must sign up through a signup sheet at SABA or by sending email.

II.Quiz Competition: (Children through Adults)

  1. Three age groups will participate Group 1: Ages 5 to 10, Group 2: Ages 11 to 18, Group 3: Adults.
  2. Participants should register with SABA organizers. A signup sheet will be posted in SABA.
  3. Each age group will consist of three teams, and each team will consist of 3 to 4 participants.
  4. Group 1 and 2 will be initially screened during Sunday school hours. Group 3 (adults) will be initially screened during SABA daily program. If Non Sunday school children cannot make it during school hours, they need to contact the SABA volunteers for special arrangements.
  5. Teams within their age groups will compete with each other, on the designated weekend in front of the community. (See SABA special program schedule for all event dates)
  6. Teams are expected to answer verbal questions posed to them, or recognize slides of important Islamic sites. We will be trying to style at least part of the quiz in the format of the popular gameshow Who Wants to Be a Millionaire.

III.Debate Competition: (Youth and Adults)

  1. Participants will be 13 years or older. A separate children’s movie night will take place during this time (See SABA special program schedule for all event dates)
  2. At least three topics of general interest will be debated among various age groups (youth and adults).
  3. The whole community can participate. Individuals interested in making comments can volunteer to participate, and will be invited by program moderators to come forward and deliver their comments.

IV.Table Tennis Competition: (Youth and Adults)

  1. Participants interested in competing need to register with the SABA organizers during any SABA event, or via Email. Sign-up sheet will be placed on SABA premises. (See SABA special program schedule for all event dates)
  2. The game involves double play, i.e. team of two players.
  3. Teams will be formed by drawing names from a pot.
  4. Teams will compete with each other on the same random draw basis.
  5. Separate competitions for men and women.

V.Carrom Board Competition: (Youth and Adults)

  1. Participants interested in competing, need to register with the SABA organizers during any SABA event, or via Email. Sign-up sheet will be placed on SABA premises. (See SABA special program schedule for all event dates)
  2. The game involves double play, i.e. team of two players.
  3. Teams will be formed, by drawing names from a pot. Random selection.
  4. Teams will compete with each other on the same random draw basis.
  5. Separate competitions for men and women.
  1. Workshop on Islamic Art
  1. Participants will be youth 13 years old – 33 years old only.
  2. Children below 10 years of age will have a separate workshop, Ramadhan Crafts and Activities. This workshop will be conducted by SABA volunteers.
  3. Led by Br., a community activist and art teacher at Grenada Islamic school. Explore the artistic dimensions of Islam and observe hands on how art can help you understand your faith..
  4. Should be an extremely unique experience. There is no formal registration required for this session. .

  1. Sporting Night at Milpitas Sporting Center: (Children through Adults)
  1. After the daily SABA program, interested participants need to drive to the Center. (8:00 p.m.)
  2. Events will involve Basketball for boys, Volleyball for girls.
  3. Pre-register with SABA organizers, need a specific body count.

VIII. Chand Raat Celebration: (Entire Community)

  1. Celebration arranged at SABA.
  2. Food stalls, Heena stalls, Clothes Stalls, etc. etc.
  3. Games and fun.

IX.Eid Celebration Day: (Entire Community)

  1. Winners of Ramadhan special events will be recognized.
  2. Young children will conduct a Play.
  3. Youth will conduct a Play.
  4. Food and Snacks.
  5. Goodies for children.
