STUDY GUIDE 4—CHRIST IN DISCIPLE-MAKING

For Sermon on March 4, 2018

At Faith Church we have defined a DISCIPLE as . . .

. . . one who seeks to imitate the whole life of Christ by being in communion with God,

in community with others, and on mission with Christ.

The definition begins with Christ and concludes with Christ, yet so much of disciple-making is reduced to plans we follow or tasks we check off rather than a living dynamic relationship with our Savior and Lord. How can we shift from focusing on the routines of our Christian life to a genuine relationship with Christ himself?

The Christ of the Great Commission (Read Matthew 28:16-18)

1.How do we perceive the directions Christ gives us day by day when we can’t hear his audible voice?

2.When you have an encounter with Christ, what is your typical response? How would you rate yourself on a scale ranging from doubt/resistance to worship/obedience?

Doubt ||||||||||Worship

Resistance Obedience

3.Do our lives as disciples reflect an acute awareness that ALL authority belongs to Christ? Why do we sometimes think that submitting to his authority is negotiable?

APPLYHow might your life look different if you lived each day in submission to Christ’s authority? How might it look the same?

The Charge of the Great Commission (Read Matthew 28:19-20)

4.How would you assess yourself as a disciple in the areas of . . .

. . . Imitation of Christ? . . . Communion with God? . . . Community with others?

. . . On mission with Christ?

5.If you are actively engaged in disciple-making, who are you discipling? If you are not actively engaged in disciple-making, ask God to show you which individual(s) he might be leading you to disciple. Make this a focus of your prayers each day until you have an answer.

6.What role does believer’s baptism fulfill in disciple-making?

7.In what ways are you being taught to follow Christ? What have you learned about following Christ’s commands over the last 30 days?

8.What does it mean to you to know that Christ is with you at all times for all time?

APPLYWhat has impacted you the most in what you have learned about the centrality of Christ in making disciples?

APPLYOver the next year what do you desire to see Christ do in your life as a disciple? As a disciple-maker?
