Application for MSCD-Ethiopia

Study Abroad Pilot Program, Summer 2012

This is an application package for eight weeks of study in Ethiopia during the summer of 2012, funded by the U.S. Department of State and sponsored by Metropolitan State College of Denver. The fifteen applicants selected to participate will take three courses to be taught jointly by faculty from MSCD and Axum University:Nile Valley Civilizations, Integrated Issues in Anthropology, and Introduction to Amharic language. There will also be some service-learning activities required of students while they are in Ethiopia. Applications are due by 1 October 2011. Students will be interviewed in October, and selections will be announced on 1 December 2011.

To be eligible for this program, you must be a citizen, a national, or a permanent resident of the U.S. You must be an MSCD student with at least thirty credits earned at MSCDby the end of the fall 2011 semester, and a cumulative GPA of at least 2.50. You will have to attend some meetings on campus before the trip, engage in some service-learning while there, and make some outreach presentations in Denver after you return. You must submit a 2011-12 FAFSA and have a completed file with the Financial Aid office by October 1, 2011. You must be able to count the courses toward your major, your minor, or as electives toward graduation, and graduation must not occur before August, 2012. Finally, you must be willing to adapt to living conditions in northern Ethiopia.

Preference will be given to students in a teacher-licensure programor majoring in Modern Languages, in Anthropology, or in another discipline in thesocial sciences.

Students will have to pay tuition for nine credit hours, and pay for any passport fees, vaccinations, books, medical evacuation insurance, and personal expenses. The cost of airfare, ground transportation, lodging, meals, and field trips within Ethiopia will be paid for out of the grant from the U.S. State Department.

The tentative departure date is 1 June 2012. The tentative return date is 31 July 2012. Most of these eight weeks will be spent at the Axum University, but the program will also include excursions to other cities including Addis Ababa, Gonder, and Lalibela, and a trip to the mountains of Simien, a national park.

The instructors will be Dr. Jacqueline McLeod from the Departmentof African-American Studies, who will teach Nile Valley Civilizations, and Dr. Julie Reyes from the Department of Anthropology, who will teach Integrated Issues in Anthropology. A member of the faculty at Axum University will teachIntroductionto Amharic.
