Student Vaccine Options Explanation

Since you have not been able to provide adequate documentation of having received two measles and at least one mumps and one rubella vaccine you have several options to consider depending on your situation and your preferences.

No record of any Measles, Mumps or Rubella Vaccines:

If you believe you have had these vaccines as a child but cannot provide adequate medical documentation you have two options.

  • Receive the MMR (measles, mumps and rubella) Vaccine.
  • This can be done at Student Health Services
  • It will result in a $85 charge to your student account
  • You will receive the necessary paperwork to submit to your Insurance for a possible refund (we will provide the necessary receipt at the pharmacy, however it is your responsibility to submit the paperwork and we cannot guarantee reimbursement).
  • For your second MMR vaccine requirements—see below
  • Obtain measles, mumps, and rubella blood tests at a cost to you of approximately $70.
  • This needs to be paid directly to your UAlbany student account
  • This cost is generally not reimbursable by insurance
  • In the event these blood test show you are not immune to the diseases (measles, mumps and rubella) you will need to receive vaccines.

Record of One MMR vaccine:

If you have adequate documentation of one MMR vaccine (including one given here at Student Health Services) you have two options.

  • Receive the MMR (measles, mumps and rubella) Vaccine.
  • This can be done at Student Health Services
  • It will result in a $85 charge to your student account
  • You will receive the necessary paperwork to submit to your Insurance for a possible refund (we will provide the necessary receipt however it is your responsibility to submit the paperwork and we cannot guarantee reimbursement.)
  • Obtain measles blood test at a cost to you of approximately $28.
  • This needs to be paid directly to your UAlbany student account
  • This cost is generally NOT reimbursable by your insurance
  • In the event this blood test shows you are not immune to measles you will need to receive one more MMR vaccine.

Facts regarding MMR vaccine and blood tests:

  • Having additional MMR vaccines is not harmful, so don’t worry if you think you had them as a child but don’t have records and receive the vaccine again.
  • Having had one MMR vaccine makes it 90% likely a blood test will show immunity
  • Having had two MMR vaccines makes it 95-99% likely a blood test will show immunity
  • If a blood test shows you are NOT immune—you will need to receive at least one more vaccine (possibly two depending on your situation)
