As from September 2010, South Australia has moved into line with the High Risk Work Licensing System. This applies to all tickets issued in SA (before September 2010) for Forklifts, EWP above 11m, Crane Dogging, Rigging, pressure equipment etc. These tickets will need to be converted into the new system.

Please check the conversion chart below for certificates of competency to high risk work licenses.

Date of Issue / You must convert your qualifications before:
Before 3 April 1995 / 1 September 2011
4 April 1995 – 31 December 1998 / 1 September 2012
1 January 1999 – 31 December 2001 / 1 September 2013
1 January 2002 – 31 December 2004 / 1 September 2014
1 January 2005 – 31 August 2010 / 1 September 2015

To convert your ticket to a new national licence, there are 3 steps.

1. Check the issue date of your oldest ticket.

2. Check its expiry date in the chart above.

3. Contact SafeWork SA on 1300 975 909 to start the conversion process.

Make sure you have all original certificates and tickets with you before contacting SafeWork SA.

When you call 1300 975 909, you will be asked for details about any certificates or tickets issued to you before 3 April 1995.

Tickets issued before 3 April 1995:- You will be issued an application package. You will receive forms that ask for details of your certificates, and declarations for your employer to complete to verify that you have undertaken the relevant work during the last 2 years. You should send your completed application and declaration form/s to SafeWork SA, with your original certificates. Once your application is processed, a tax invoice will be sent to you.

Tickets issued after 3 April 1995:- Can be converted directly to the new licence, without providing additional evidence. When you call 1300 975 909, you will be asked to provide details of your current certificates. If all details are in order, SafeWork SA will send you a tax invoice.

Paying for your new licence:- Take your tax invoice to Service SA Customer Service Centre or an Australia Post Photo Capture outlet. You will need to show 100 points of identification, provide your invoice, pay $65.00 (or $35.00 if you are adding a class) and have your photograph taken. If you are applying to convert a forklift Notice of Satisfactory Assessment (NSA) – Class LF, you must show your NSA for forklift operation at the time of payment. Your application will be processed and your new Licence to Perform High Risk Work will be mailed to you.

Please note that Load Shifting equipment such as Loader, Excavator, Backhoe, Skid Steer (Bob Cat), and Dozer do not fall under the High Risk Categories. They continue to require a state certificate of competency.

High risk licences obtained from another state the following will apply:

  • Phone SafeWorkSA on (08) 8303 0400 and ask for the Licensing Team
  • They will take all the details and forward an Interstate Qualification Conversation form to be completed and returned to them with copies of the interstate tickets.
