Persuasive Speech Requirements

  • Individual or in groups of 2-5 students as a symposium format; will select one topic and each person is responsible for different subtopics/ viewpoints
  • 2-4 minute speech for each individual; participate in question & answer session after speeches
  • Speech must be memorized or you may use note cards (3x5 size)
  • You must have a minimum of 3 sources, at least 1 of which must be a database
  • Sources must be orally cited all throughout your speech! (Author/ publication & date)
  • You need to use a visual aid to enhance your speech (poster, chart, graph, pictures, etc.)
  • Turn in a typed outline in Monroe’s Motivated Sequence organizational format
  • Include bibliography/ works cited with sources cited in full MLA format
  • Incorporate ethos, pathos & logos into each speech
  • Symposium groups need to consider: Topic, subtopics, which group member will cover what subtopic, what order members will speak, who will moderate symposium (introduce topic and speakers)
  • Grading: Summative grade for presentation- individual speech or group symposium; quiz grade for outline (individual)
