Student Success Leader: First Generation Peer Mentors

Purpose:To guide students through several significant changes that affect a student’s success in first year, by building a social support network that connects First Generation students to one another, to other students on campus, and to the services and programs offered at McMaster University.

First Generation Definition: You are considered a First Generation Student (FGS) if your parent(s)/guardian(s) has/have not attended a post-secondary institution. If you have a sibling who has attended a post-secondary institution but your parent(s)/guardian(s) have not, you are still considered a First Generation student. If you parents attended post-secondary education outside of Canada, you are still considered a First Generation student.

Position Description
The First Generation (FG) Peer Mentor’s responsibilities are to support First Generation students throughout the year in a mentoring role facilitated primarily through social events and on occasion, 1:1 drop ins during peak times of the academic year. FG Peer Mentors act as a consistent resource and sounding board throughout the year by hosting drop-in Q&A sessions, organizing outreach and social events for First Generation students, and recommending McMaster programs and services to First Generation students. FG Peer Mentors also support the promotion of the program through organizing and staffing outreach initiatives
