The function of the Student Senate shall be to provide an opportunity for its members to discuss and express their views upon any matter which they deem of general student interest and to make recommendations or pass resolutions with respect thereto. The Student Senate shall speak as the representative voice of the undergraduates on affairs of concern to the undergraduate community.

The Student Senate is the governing body for all undergraduate students and recognized student organizations at Lehigh. The purpose of the Student Senate is to protect student rights and promote positive change. Students’ needs are the primary focus of the Senate.

Representation is determined by residency and each constituency has nine seats:

Please note that if a Senator is in a fraternity or sorority, that is the constituency for which they must run, regardless of their residency.

There is also a five person Executive Board that is elected by the previous Senate.

What has Student Senate XXVII done?

  • Represent the student body and serve on various faculty committees
  • Worked closely with Transportation Services to start a pilot program for weekend buses and organized buses for Thanksgiving and spring break
  • Made progress on a diversity class proposal that is currently being reviewed by faculty
  • Held a campus-wide formal that was a pilot program to having events with alcohol on campus
  • Worked with the Admissions Office to create monthly “Top 10 Things” to do in Bethlehem
  • Co-sponsored events with other organizations, including the LGBT Equality game and keeping the Goose open late with Panhel and SAC

Qualifications and expectations for senators

  • Be an undergraduate, full-time matriculating student
  • Agree to attend bi-monthly (every other week) full Senate meetings (Tuesdays from 4:15-6:00 p.m.)
  • Agree to attend an overnight retreat with Student Senate in fall 2015
  • Agree to serve on two committees, which meet weekly
  • Agree to represent the concerns of your constituency and work for positive change on campus

Application Requirements

  • Submit a petition of 20 signatures from members of your constituency.
  • Submit a brief platform (maximum 150 words) via email in Microsoft Word
  • Submit a headshot of yourself, attached to your email as a separate file, which fits into 100x100 pixelbox. Email both platform and picture to
