STUDENT BODY RESOLUTION 2007-103
WE, THE STUDENTS OF THE UNIVERSITY OF FLORIDA, HEREBY RESOLVE:
TITLE: Resolution in Support of the Creation of a University Intellectual Property Advisory Committee

WHEREAS, faculty and student input is important and valuable for all functions of the University; and
WHEREAS, numerous university committees exist to advise on various functions of the University, in addition to committees at the college, department, and unit level; and
WHEREAS, the University of Florida is recognized as a major research university, having received more than $518 million in funding for sponsored research in FY 2005-06, resulting in many important inventions; and
WHEREAS, the Office of Technology Licensing was established in 1985 to work with inventors to facilitate the transfer of technologies created at UF to the commercial sector for public benefit; and
WHEREAS, no committee exists in which students and faculty can discuss UF's intellectual property policies; and
WHEREAS, it is in the best interest of UF community to develop and pursue sustainable strategies for the management of university research; and
WHEREAS, many other American universities have committees with a comparable function, including: Massachusetts Institute of Technology; University of Washington; University of Utah; North Carolina State University; Yale University; Indiana University; University of Texas at Dallas; California State University, Long Beach; Tennessee State University; James Madison University; and University of Notre Dame; and
WHEREAS, UF students have expressed interest in the creation of such a committee; then
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the students of the University of Florida support the creation of a university Intellectual Property Advisory Committee, consisting of faculty and student representatives, to periodically review the University's intellectual property policies and recommend such changes as the committee deems desirable; and
THEREFORE, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the students of the University of Florida request that the President of the University, the Vice President for Research, and the Chair of the Faculty Senate, in consultation with the Student Body President, design and establish a university Intellectual Property Advisory Committee.
