Quorum was met.

Parents were asked to go over the minutes for November. Approval of minutes for November as written by Michael Barrett and seconded by a parent.

The position of SAC Secretary is open as Mrs. Reid is leaving the position and the school. The position must be filled by a staff member.

Spoke of school accreditation for Broward county schools.

Stakeholder interviews

Total of 1287 stakeholders in Broward overall gave their opinions in the interview.

Index of Education Quality was discussed and Park Lakes E.S. was not too far off of the average.

Accreditation was approved for Broward Schools.

PRINCIPAL’S UPDATE – Ms. Orinthia Dias

Asked the staff to come up and introduce themselves.

In attendance: Ms. St.Hilaire, Ms. Stroud, Ms. Seay, Ms. Reid, Ms. Tarnoki, Ms. Campbell, Mr. Bronstein, Ms. Turner, Ms. Mehu, Ms. Charley, Mr. Pierre, Ms. Lovett, Ms. Wilson, Mrs. Brooks, Ms. Webley, Ms. Lee, and Ms. Pluchino.

School City Challenge – Math and ELA and Science tests were taken over the last couple of weeks.

Exciting news – Beacon is coming to film at our school, they are going to highlight our school for the Zone Highlights. FAU Program, student teachers and the STREAM Academy will be featured.

Friday Dec. 9 – Tree lighting ceremony – City of Lauderdale Lakes, please come out to support our school and students.

Dec. 12th – Spelling Bee - 6:00

Intermediate in the cafeteria and primary in the media center.

Dec. 15th – Lauderdale Lakes Middle School – Open House at 6:00 PM, parents and students are welcome to check out the programs available.

Dec. 20 – 21st – Winter Program – There will be 3 programs so that all of the school can view it. Please see the school calendar for the days and times. Parents are welcome.

Club Thursday – Every Thursday after school – extracurricular activities. Teachers volunteer their time.

Great Gains Golden Ticket students – Monday, Thursday and Friday – 3 – 5th grade.

The students come in and receive additional computer instructional time. They will have parties for those that are coming to the program consistently. Once they receive their golden tickets they move to the front of the cafeteria line and have additional privileges. They will then go to their assigned areas in the morning. They will be receiving this additional computer based instruction on the Monday, Wednesday and Thursday mornings.

$300,000 of new computers from SMART bond.

K – 3, 1 to 5 computer to student ratio.

4th and 5th grade have a computer per person.

SAFETY UPDATE – MS. LORI TURNER

Please be vigilant when dropping off your children so that they are not at the school or the bridge before 7:45 when there is supervision available. After school care, Sunshine has been our provider for our aftercare programs for many years. We would like to thank them for their service.

ASP After school Programs – will be our new childcare takers next school year.

Dr. Verda Barrow, Executive Director, presented to our parents the new program that is incoming. Brochures were given out to the parents and teachers explaining the program.

Elissa Hutshneker, Director of Grant Administration, spoke to the parents and committee about the grants and how we qualify for them. The Grant Department is dedicated to obtaining funding for children in low income families. ASP has been awarded $20 million in funding since 2003.

Children Services Grant is about teaching the whole child, from school to home. Co-learning is a big part where the parents are invited. There are lots of computer programs, new cooking classes and additional parent training programs as well as some field trips.

Teachers will be hired from the school. Summer program based learning – STEM project based learning. There will be programs for children on non-school days, there will be field trips. Swimming, cultural field trips as well as reading programs in the summer. All Child Care Professionals are Level II screened, CPR/First Aid Certified and receive annual in-service training. Special needs children will be taught in smaller groups, no more than 3 or 4 to a CCP. Additional information available in the handouts.

There will be spots for 180 children as well as special needs children. If they reach the numbers, there will be ½ off the scholarships for some students.

Robert Liebman, Director of Operations, there are currently 83 programs in the country, 37 in Broward County.

Structure- every program has a dedicated director as well as an assistant. Every area has an area coordinator responsible for 8 schools. Programs are open for parents to come in and see what the students are doing and they are encouraged to do so.

After School Clubs Coordinator – Ms. Alicia Gaines

Reminded the parents that students must be picked up by 4:30. If the students are picked late 2 times they will be dismissed from the program. Also there is a behavior contract that the student and the parents signed. The students must have good behavior throughout the school day in order to participate.

There are a total of 12 clubs at PLE. Most in the evening. There are a couple on Thursday morning, Little Sprouts.

Dance members performed for the parents. Jingle Bell Rock.

Dance team teachers are Ms. Mehu, Ms. St. Hilaire and Ms. Trieskey.

GUIDANCE UPDATE – MS. LESLIE CAMPBELL

Title One Night – Parent Academy will be upcoming and we will be using the book “Seven Habits for Highly Successful People”. Parents will be given an opportunity to read the book and model the lessons and work on the lessons that are in the program. It is an excellent book that identifies for families behavioral issues and gives helpful lessons as well as best practices.

We would like to have 2 classes, one in the morning and one in the evening. This will be a good opportunity to give you some assistance. Parents will be asked which time works best for them.

Friday – December 9th – 9:00 – Magnet schools will be coming to our school to answer questions regarding Magnet schools. Enrollment is open now until February 17th. The programs are open. Some 4th grade students will be invited as well, depending on their scores. All of 5th grade students will be invited. Parents are also invited too.

Students are made aware that they need to know how to help themselves. If they do not understand something they need to ask specific questions of their instructors to help them to learn.

No Hassle Fundraiser – Dance Party was held recently in the Cafeteria to celebrate those students who fundraised for our school. The parents were given a letter to invite them to receive their prizes tonight. The top fundraiser will receive an iPad. Students are invited to come on to the stage after the meeting to pick up their prizes.

We would like to thank our community for supporting our school, please remember to thank them as well.

COMMUNITY LIASON UPDATE – TERYA PRATT

Overall donations - $2,900 to date.

New donations from Costco, Publix and Bucca De Beppo.

300 dictionaries were donated to our 3rd graders by one of business partners, Dr. Edwina Coleman.

Ms. Stroud had an announcement regarding older materials from our textbook coordinator, Ms. McKinney. They will be available to our parents to choose items at our next meeting in January.

PTA UPDATE – Ms. Sharon Barker

The first ever Candy Cane Shoppe, holiday shop will be held in Media Center from Dec. 19– 23rd.

Each parent that shows up tonight will receive a dollar towards spending at the holiday shop. Each teacher will have a book that children will be able to look at and choose what they would like. The parents will provide the children with money and an order form to fill out together and then they will shop at school.
