Dear SNMA Member:

Thank you for your interest in the Future Leadership Project! The Future Leadership Project (FLP) serves as a programmatic initiative in the Student National Medical Association (SNMA) to offer the general member an opportunity to gain leadership skills and learn more about the national organization. FLP is designed to recruit and mentor the next generation of SNMA leaders. Members who participate in the program will have the unique opportunity to develop leadership skills, receive mentorship from SNMA leaders and engage in personal growth.

The Future Leadership Project enters its 4th program cycle for the 2014-2015 SNMA administrative year. Participants are designated as FLP Fellows and are highly recognized within the organization. Fellows participate in an engaging and structured curriculum that will prepare them for leadership in the SNMA and in the profession of medicine.

All SNMA national members are eligible to apply for the Future Leadership Project. The application process is competitive as only twenty (20) members are selected each year. Ten (10) medical students and ten (10) premedical or post-baccalaureate students will be selected as the 2014-2015 FLP Fellows. The FLP curriculum is outlined below:

Webinar Lecture Series

–Fellows will participate in webinar lectures from SNMA alumni officers and physician leaders in medicine

–Lecture topics include: SNMA overview, leadership and business skills and diversity in medicine

Think Tank Mini-Challenges

–Fellows will form Think Tanks (small groups) to work on tasks related to leadership development and success

–Fellows will take on roles such as: 1) Task manager, 2) Recorder, 3) Presenter, 4) Spokesperson

–Think Tanks will present projectsin competition against other Think Tanks and be evaluated based on criteria

National Committee Project

–Each Fellow will join a National Committee (NC)

–Fellows will work with NC chairs to complete a project of their interest

Leadership Component

–Fellows will be invited to participate in the January Board of Directors meeting

–Fellows who attend the Annual Medical Education Conference will participate in a leadership capacity

Mentor Component

–Fellows interested in regional/national office will be paired with a national officer for individual mentorship

Members interested in the FLP program are encouraged to contact the FLP Directors to learn more about Fellow involvement and program aspects. All applications must be submitted no later than WednesdaySeptember 24, 2014. The official start of the program is Sunday October 5, 2014.
