Campaign Rules

  1. You must turn in a printed copy of your speech to Ms. Ruberto by Friday, September 18 at 3:05 p.m. You MAY NOT SEND US AN EMAIL of your speech instead of the printed copy, and we will not accept any speeches after 3:05 on this day. Any student who does not turn in a speech will not be allowed to run for a Student Council position.
  2. Make sure that you practice your speech before September 25. The more confident and well rehearsed you sound, the more likely you’ll impress the rest of the school.
  3. If any candidate adds content to his or her speech that was not in the approved draft that he/she showed Ms. Ruberto, that candidate will forfeit the chance to become an officer.
  4. It may be necessary for you to revise your speech after you submit your draft. If this is the case, we will give you more details at that time.
  5. You MAY NOT give out anything to other students as you campaign. This includes candy, buttons, flyers, etc.
  6. You MAY NOT hang up posters in school to campaign.
  7. If you would like to address the students during lunch, you must first ask Ms. Ruberto to get permission from the lunchroom teachers.
  8. The best way for you to make a good impression on the rest of the students is to prepare an honest, engaging speech and be friendly to the underclassman in the hallways.
  9. While participating in in the election, on or off school grounds and including social media, your conduct must conform withthe rules established in the Demarest Middle School Student Hand Book. Individuals participating in negative campaigning will receive consequences appropriate to their behavior.

By becoming a Student Council officer, it means that you agree to:

  • Attend weekly officer meetings at lunch,
  • Attend all general Student Council meetings at lunch,
  • Commit to arriving at school early to give the morning announcements several days a week,
  • Take on responsibility for helping with all Student Council events, both during and after school,
  • And take the initiative to bring new ideas to Student Council meetings.
