Discussion Point NUS
Student Council Discussion Point (SCF4)
Student Council is often the most appropriate sounding board for an idea before a full proposal is written. A discussion point will allow the proposer to introduce a topic and gauge wider student opinion before taking further steps with an idea/issue.
1.This Council Notes
State the facts surrounding the issue
There is a lot of controversy currently surrounding NUS and the various Unions that are holding referendums to determine their affiliation
There is a cohort of NUS officers that are being publicly criticized for their opinions and views
It was very strongly believed by the former President that we should hold a referendum
2.This Council Believes
State what you believe
That the Union is best remaining affiliated with NUS due to the buying consortium and the Unions need to become self-sustaining
We are still getting support from NUS through Richard Brooks NUS VP Union Development and through our local rep Jo Johnson.
The benefits still outweigh the cons in regards to staying affiliated, as such a referendum need not occur
3.This Council Resolves
State what you believe should happen if Council agrees with the concept discussed
No referendum is required by the council
The University of Northampton Students Union remains affiliated with NUS but must select and choose which campaigns and ideas to get involved with based upon the needs of our students

4.This Council Notes
State the facts surrounding the issue
During the Societies Committee that took place on Monday the 10th October, a large amount of societies voted against the ratification of the SAGA (LGBTQ) society.
5.This Council Believes
State what you believe
The Union should be an extremely welcoming place to anyone and a every society when they submit their constitution agree to be welcoming to everyone, regardless of sexuality, age, gender, race etc.
6.This Council Resolves
State what you believe should happen if Council agrees with the concept discussed
We believe this issue should be brought to light at Student Council and questions should be asked to the society councilors why they believed this was the case.
