Welcome to UWC! Deadline: 16th February ,2017

Student and parent information and conditions of application

UWC schools, colleges and programmes deliver a challenging and transformative education experience to a diverse cross section of students, inspiring them to create a more peaceful and sustainable future.

UWC has 15 schools and colleges across 5 continents all with distinctive characters but sharing the same mission, ethos and values.

Although strong academic achievement is valued highly at UWC, academic achievements are put into perspective with a demanding mix of community engagement, international affairs, physical activities and creative pursuits.

Our student intake is deliberately diverse and each of the schools and colleges draws together students from many different nations and backgrounds. Scholarships aim to ensure a broad socio-economic mix within the student body that adds value to the student experience and the organisation.

UWC depends on the dedication and expertise of a network of volunteers to promote UWC and select future students. These are called national committees and they operate in more than 140 countries worldwide.

This year the Guyanese National Committee has received two full and one 75% scholarships for which they select students to study the International Baccalaureate(IB) Diploma.

Please make sure you find out as much as possible about UWC before going ahead with your application. It is important that you understand the aims of the organisation and the commitment involved in the programmes that are offered. For more information please go to www.uwc.org and www.uwcguyana.org .

To be eligible to apply you must meet the following criteria:

·  Citizens or Permanent Residents of Guyana for no less than 3 years.

·  Currently enrolled in a Guyanese high school or first year of university

·  Age at least 16 on September 1 2017

Your final application must include all the information request in this application form.

Selection process:

All applications will be reviewed by a selection panel consisting of volunteers selected by the UWC Guyana National Committee. A short-list of applicants will be invited to a selection interview weekend which is likely to be held on the weekend of 18-19 March 2017.

The panel will consider only those students they feel would be able to handle the academic rigours of the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme. However grades are not the main consideration, as the panel will consider evidence that the applicant will contribute to the UWC community and wider society as an outstanding representative of Guyanese youth, irrespective of financial background.

Mission statement: “UWC makes education a force to unite people, nations and cultures for peace and a sustainable future:

“UWC believes that to achieve peace and a sustainable future, the values it promotes are crucial”

·  International and intercultural understanding

·  Celebration of difference

·  Personal responsibility and integrity

·  Mutual responsibility and respect

·  Compassion and service

·  Respect for the environment

·  A sense of idealism

·  Personal challenge

·  Action and personal example

Financial arrangements:

The scholarships available for Guyanese students for 2017-19 entry are:

Changshu College (Jiangsu Province, China)

UWC South East Asia (Singapore)

UWC Pearson College (Canada)

The scholarships for UWC South East Asia and UWC Pearson Canada are needs-based, covering up to 100% of all expenses including flights, fees, bed and board etc.

The scholarships for UWC South East Asia and UWC Pearson are 100% need based, excluding flights and visa expenses and Changshu College are 78% of fees (which include bed and board) not including visas, transport etc. The estimated cost of 22% remaining fees and all other expenses over the 2 years is 28,000 USD for each place. UWC Guyana is currently seeking funds to cover the difference in the hope to be able to offer these places as full scholarships.

Please also note an application is made to UWC and not to a particular school or college (although you are welcome to state your preference). Schools reserve the right to make the final decision.
