Sometimes the most spontaneous knitting projects are the best! I’ve had these colors sitting in my stash for a while and thought- wouldn’t it be cool if I made a pom pom out of these 3 colors? Then I realize that I needed something to put the pom pom on top of- so the striped pom pom beanie came to be!

To make your own striped pom pom beanie, you will need to know:

How to knit in the round on circular needles ~ How to knit in the round on double pointed needles – You are not doing this

How to decrease (Knit 2 together) How to Knit & Purl How to change colors (instructions and tutorial link provided below)

Yarn / Needle Size
Worsted weight:
Main Color (MC): Gray 100 yards
Contrasting Color 1 Pink (CC1): 50 yards
Contrasting Color 2 Yellow (CC2): 50 yards / Us Size 7 (4.5mm) 16” circulars (40cm)
Us Size 8 (5.0mm) 16” circulars (40cm)
Us Size 8 (5.0mm) DPN’s (5) / Stitch Marker
Yarn needle for weaving in ends
Pom pom maker (optional)

Gauge: 16 sts. & 22 rows = 4″ in stockinette st.

Abbreviations: K: Knit P: Purl sl1: Slip 1 (for this pattern we will always be slipping 1 purlwise)

K2tog: Knit 2 together pm : place marker MC: Main Color (My main color for this pattern is gray)

CC1: Contrasting Color 1 (My CC1 is pink) CC2: Contrasting Color 2 (My CC2 is yellow)

st : stitch DPN: Double pointed needles

Pattern Notes: When changing colors, don’t cut yarn. Carry yarn up as you work. In order to create joggless stripes, we slip the first st. purlwise on the second row of the color change. Here’s a great tutorial on creating joggless stripes in the round! – You are not doing this

Begin Pattern: With size 7 needles, cast on 96 sts. Join in the round and pm. – You are not doing this

Brim: Work in K2, P2 ribbing for 4” – ending on a wrong side row

Hat Body: Switch to size 8 needles.

With MC Work 6 rounds as follows:

Row 1: Sl 1st st. purlwise, K to end of round

Row 2: P to end of round

Row 3: Sl 1st st. purlwise, K to end of round

Row 4: P to end of round

Row 5: Sl 1st st. purlwise, K to end of round

Row 6: P to end of round

Row 7: With CC1, K to end of round

Row 8: Sl 1st st. purlwise, P to end of round

Row 9: With MC K to end of round

Row 10: Sl 1st st purlwise, P to end of round

Row 11: With CC2 K to end of round

Row 12: Sl 1st st. as if to purl, P to end of round

Row 13: With MC, K to end of round

Row 14: Sl 1 st. purlwise, P to end of round

Row 15: Sl 1st st. purlwise, K to end of round

Row 16: P to end of round

Row 17: Sl 1st st. purlwise, K to end of round

Row 18: P to end of round

Row 19: Sl 1st st. purlwise, K to end of round

Row 20: P to end of round

Rep. Rows 7 to 13 one more time. Now rows 21 - 27

Row 21: With CC1, K to end of round

Row 22: Sl 1st st. purlwise, P to end of round

Row 23: With MC K to end of round

Row 24: Sl 1st st purlwise, P to end of round

Row 25: With CC2 K to end of round

Row 26: Sl 1st st. as if to purl, P to end of round

Row 27: With MC, K to end of round

Row 28: Sl 1st st. as if to purl, P to end of round

Switch to MC and begin dec. Rows.

Switch to DPN’s when sts. become difficult to knit on circular needles. – You are not doing this

Decrease Rows:

Row 29: K6, K2tog, (84sts.)

Row 30: sl 1st st pulrlwise, P to end of round

Row 31: K5, K2tog (72 sts.)

Row 32: P

Row 33: K4, K2tog (60 sts.)

Row 34: P

Row 35: K3, K2tog (48 sts.)

Row 36: P

Row 37: K2, K2tog (36 sts.)
Row 38: P

Row 39: K1, K2tog (24 sts.)

Row 40: P2 tog to end of row (12 sts.)

Thread yarn through remaining sts, removing them from the needles, pull tight to secure top.

Make pom pom, and sew to top of beanie. Enjoy!
