Course Name: 7th Grade Social Studies

Required Text/ Materials: Students will be using the World Cultures and Geography textbook. A writing utensil, paper, a three-ring binder with dividers, a CD-R disk, and textbook should be brought to class daily. Colored pencils and highlighters are highly recommended.

Suggested References: Additional information can be obtained from encyclopedias, maps, globes, historical books, and the internet. We will use the internet in class to research information, present information to classmates, and take virtual tours such as the Serengeti of Africa, Mt. Everest, and the Great Wall of China.

Course Description: This course will analyze key aspects of the world’s geography, including, but not limited to:

d  The Five Themes of Geography

d  Economic Developments

d  Cultural Geography

d  Physical Geography

d  Historical Developments

Course Objective: Students will demonstrate improvement in their learning and application of the history, government, economics, and physical geography of the Middle East, Asia, and Africa.

d  Environmental and Economic issues of the Middle East

d  Origins of the Middle East

d  The Geography and History of Africa

d  Comparing African Nations

d  Asian Geography

d  CRCT Prep and Enrichment

Evaluation: Grading will be completed in accordance with the student handbook. Any students failing two marking periods and/or one semester are required to attend summer school and may be retained.

Weight of Class Requirements:

25% Classwork, including binder, vocabulary, and warm-ups, and essential questions/standards log

30% Assessments, including tests and quizzes

20% Reports and projects

10% Homework

15% Participation/Organization

Expectations: All students are expected to complete and turn all assignments on time. No late grades will be accepted for major projects (few exceptions ). Students that fail to complete assignments will not be successful in this class. Lunch and/or after school detentions may be utilized when students fall behind in their work.

How to get extra help: ASK! I will be glad to help any student. See me before or after class/school. When in doubt, ask!
