Steps to Digitally Frame an Image

(Learn how to change CANVAS SIZE, INVERSE SELECTIONS, CREATE NEW LAYER, CLONE)

Open Photoshop and your chosen self-portrait.

Crop image if you prefer and change image size to approximately 4x6 inches.

Go to Canvas Size and increase dimensions around image (an inch or so depending on what size you want your frame) by inputting new lengths (inches) for both width and height.

You should now have white space around your self-portrait.

Go to the Internet and search for an image (google or msn.com image search engines) that you want to use for your frame (type in wood, metal, etc)

Find a large size image (notice image dimensions) and right click it to COPY.

Go to Photoshop and click on FILE, NEW, EDIT, and PASTE it.

You should now have 2 images open in Photoshop (your self-portrait and your future frame).

Click on your self-portrait and choose the marquee tool. Draw a box around your image.

Go to SELECT, INVERSE to reverse it– now the white areas should be selected on your self-portrait.

Now click on CLONE TOOL.

Click on new image (frame to be) image and hold down ALT key on the area you want to clone or copy to your portrait as a frame.

To use clone key you must hold down ALT & click on left mouse button to specify area to be cloned.

Next, Go to portrait and start filling in white area around portrait with the other image.

You will have to specify many different areas of the image probably to blend new frame smoothly together.

You should be using a large blurry brush.

***now is a good time to watch the tutorial (Framing Digitally) which is located in the Z:ANourse “tutorial” folder

If this process doesn’t work well for you click on Pattern Stamp tool (under clone tool) and experiment.

(You can create your own patterns, load more patterns, or use defaults for a digital frame)

You can also use any of the tools in Photoshop (like gradients, brushes, filters, etc) instead of cloning to create your frame. You can copy a frame directly from the Net, Paste it on top of your image and resize it to fit.

When finished, save it to your folder as .psd &.jpg and my folder as a .JPG (Z:ANourse)
