ASDL Website Instructions for Reviewers8/25/03

Step 1: Log in

Use to enter the site. You can log in with your email address and the password we gave you. After you push the “Login” button, you will see a screen that welcomes you to the site and shows what reviews you have pending. You will note that there are three drop down menus at the top of the screen, “Information”, “Actions” and “Communicate”. Selections marked with an * are planned but not yet implemented.

Since this is the first time you have logged in, you will want to set up your preferences. Choose “Information” using you left mouse button and click on “My preferences”. Please enter your name and contact information (mailing address, phone, fax and email). You should also change your password (you have to type it twice). Note that you also have to enter your old password correctly for the change to take effect. Select your interests by clicking items in the menu or entering them into the text box. These interests will be useful for AE’s searching for an appropriate reviewer. Here and throughout the system you can select more than one item from a list by holding down the Control button on your keyboard while selecting items with the mouse. When you’re done, press the “Update” button.

Step 2: Viewing Your Sites

At the top of the screen there are 3 drop down menus reading “Information”, “Actions”, and “Communicate”. Left click on the “Actions” drop down menu and select “Sites for me to review”. This screen will list sites that you need review, their author, and title. To view the site, left click on the title, and another window will pop up displaying the site.

Step 3: Getting to the Form

Now that you have read over the website thoroughly, you are ready to complete the review form. You will find that it is helpful to keep the site you are reviewing open while working on the review. The first thing you need to do is select which site you will be reviewing. To do this, click the circle under the heading “Select” to the right of the site and scroll down to the form at the bottom of the page. The ASDLID and the Title of the site you are reviewing should already be filled in.

Step 4: Determining the Type

The next step is to determine what type of website it is. If you click on the drop down menu to the left of “Type of Website:” you’ll see the following options: “Person (Single Source)”, “Education”, “Government”, “Industry”, and “Other”. “Person” refers to a site with a single author. “Education” refers to a website that is primarily associated with a university department or research group. “Government” refers to a website that is associated with a government agency, such as the EPA. “Industry” refers to a website that is associated with a company, such as Bruker. Finally, “Other” refers to a website associated with a source that doesn’t fall under any of the previous categories, such as a non-profit organization or a journal. You should select one of those choices from the drop down list.

Step 5: Evaluating the Website

This is probably the most important part of the reviewing process because it lets us know what you think about the website in your own words. We ask you to evaluate the website based on four different categories: “Pedagogy”, “Content”, “Browsing”, and “Audience”. Each of these areas is listed to the left of a textbox where you can type your comments. In the text box is a statement that further instructs you on how to evaluate the site. As soon as you click in the textbox to write, the statement will disappear, so be sure you have a firm grasp of what you are writing before you begin.

Step 6: Making a Recommendation and Choosing Keywords

After you have expressed the good and negative things about the site in your own words, we ask you to make a concrete statement that sums up what you think the status of the site should be. We call this statement your “Recommendation”. You have four, fairly self-explanatory options: “Excellent, strongly recommend inclusion in ASDL”, “Very Good, include unless better sites are available in ASDL”, “Insufficient quality for inclusion in ASDL”, and “Inappropriate for ASDL”. Please choose one. The final step in reviewing your site is to list some keywords. Again, the statement in the textbox will disappear as soon as you click in it. Think of words that you would want to identify the site in a search, and enter them into the box. Now, just push the “Submit” button, and you’re done.

Step 7: Keep Track of What is Going On

Sometimes it helps to see the big picture of what is going on. If you want to view the status of all of your sites, your work history, or a report on your activity, use the “Information” drop down menu at the top of the screen. Also, if you need to contact someone, or have any questions, the “Communication” drop down menu will be soon be very helpful. We encourage you to play around with the different menus and options to get used to the setup of the site.

Thank you for you time and effort to help build the Analytical Sciences Digital Library.
