SECTION 230553 - IDENTIFICATION FOR HVAC PIPING AND EQUIPMENT

Revise this Section by deleting and inserting text to meet Project-specific requirements.

PART 1 - GENERAL

1.1RELATED DOCUMENTS

Retain or delete this article in all Sections of Project Manual.

  1. Drawings and general provisions of the Contract, including General and Supplementary Conditions and Division01 Specification Sections, apply to this Section.

1.2SUMMARY

1.3ACTION SUBMITTALS

  1. Product Data: For each type of product indicatedprovide manufacturers standard product data sheets Data sheets must detail compliance with applicable standards for color and size and clearly define durability of no less than 5 years.
  2. Samples: For color, letter style, and graphic representation required for each identification material and device.
  3. Equipment Nameplate Schedule: Include a listing of all equipment to be labeled with the proposed content for each nameplate.
  4. Valve numbering scheme: Provide a list of acceptable abbreviations to be used on each service to be identified and the numbering scheme to be used.
  5. Valve Schedules: For each piping system to include in maintenance manuals.

1.4COORDINATION

  1. Coordinate installation of identifying devices with completion of covering and painting of surfaces where devices are to be applied.
  2. Coordinate installation of identifying devices with locations of access panels and doors.
  3. Install identifying devices before installing acoustical ceilings and similar concealment.

PART 2 - PRODUCTS

2.1EQUIPMENT NAMEPLATES

In first paragraph below, describe required label content. The objective of labeling equipment is to coordinate it with Drawings, including plans, details, and schedules. This will allow other information, such as capacities and operating characteristics, to be obtained. Capacities and operating characteristics are typically contained on the manufacturers OEM nameplate. Equipment Nameplates that are purchased and installed by the Contractor usually only contain the equipment designation as found on Drawing and sometimes brief text to add detail, such as, "CHWP-1 Chilled Water Pump."

  1. Equipment Nameplate Content: Each nameplate shall include the equipment's Drawing designation and the unique equipment number,consistent with the Drawings.
  2. Equipment Nameplate Schedule: List each item of equipment to be labeled, on 8-1/2-by-11-inch (A4) bond paper. Tabulate equipmentdesignation, identification number and identify Drawing numbers where equipment is indicated (plans, details, and schedules), plus the Specification Section number and title where equipment is specified. Equipment schedule shall be included in operation and maintenance data.

2.2WARNING SIGNS AND LABELS

Retain "Basis-of-Design Product" Subparagraph and list of manufacturers below to identify a specific product or a comparable product from manufacturers listed. Retain option and delete insert note if manufacturer's name and model number are indicated on Drawings.

  10. Minimum Letter Size: 1/4 inch (6.4 mm) for name of units if viewing distance is less than 24 inches (600 mm), 1/2 inch (13 mm) for viewing distances up to 72 inches (1830 mm), and proportionately larger lettering for greater viewing distances. Include secondary lettering two-thirds to three-fourths the size of principal lettering.

Delete "Fasteners" Paragraph below if no fasteners are required.

  1. Fasteners: [Adhesive strip] [Self-taping screws].
  2. Adhesive: Contact-type permanent acrylicadhesive, compatible with label and with substrate.
  3. Label Content: Each warning sign or label shall clearly identify the hazard, the method of avoiding the hazard, and the specific consequences of not avoiding the hazard. The sign format and content shall comply with the most current and applicable ANSI Z535 standard. If appropriate, emergency notification instructions shall be included on the signs.

2.3PIPE MARKERS

Retain this article if these devices will identify some or all piping. Identification of piping by color-coded painting is covered in "Pipe Label Installation" Article.

Do not use pipe labels or plastic tapes for bare pipes conveying fluids at temperatures of 125 degF (52 degC) or higher.

  1. General Requirements for Manufactured Pipe Markers: Identify the content and directional flow of piping systems. Whenever possible select manufacturers standard preprinted, color-coded, pipe markers. Pipe marker sizes and colors shall comply with ANSI/ASMEA13.1.
  2. Pretensioned Pipe Markers:

Retain "Basis-of-Design Product" Subparagraph and list of manufacturers below to identify a specific product or a comparable product from manufacturers listed. Retain option and delete insert note if manufacturer's name and model number are indicated on Drawings.

  1. Basis-of-Design Product: Subject to compliance with requirements, provide Brimar Industries, Inc., System #1 Markers or EZ Markers, or comparable product by one of the following:
  2. Brady, Inc.
  3. Seton, Inc.
  4. For Pipe Sizes NPS 6(DN 150) and Smaller, including Pipe Covering: Semi-rigid plastic wrap around pipe marker that extends 360 degrees around the pipe at each marker location. Include legend (pipe content) and arrows to indicate direction of flow. Equip pretensioned markers with an adhesive strip, 1/2-inch(13-mm) wide on the inside for applications on vertical locations.
  5. For Pipe Sizes Larger than NPS 6(DN 150), including Pipe Covering: Semi-rigid plastic strap-on pipe marker with a height no less than 3 times the letter height. Include legend (pipe content) and arrows to indicate direction of flow. Include at least two nylon straps to secure the marker in place.

Retain "Basis-of-Design Product" Subparagraph and list of manufacturers below to identify a specific product or a comparable product from manufacturers listed. Retain option and delete insert note if manufacturer's name and model number are indicated on Drawings.

  1. Basis-of-Design Product: Subject to compliance with requirements, provide Brimar Industries, Inc., EZ Pipe Markers, or comparable product by one of the following:

  4. Description: Adhesive backed flexible vinyl pipe markers with a minimum 1.5 mil.(0.04 mm) coating of acrylic adhesive. Include legend (pipe content) and a separate and adjacent arrow marker or arrow banding tape to indicate direction of flow.

2.4DUCT LABELS

Retain "Basis-of-Design Product" Subparagraph and list of manufacturers below to identify a specific product or a comparable product from manufacturers listed. Retain option and delete insert note if manufacturer's name and model number are indicated on Drawings.

  1. Basis-of-Design Product: Subject to compliance with requirements, provide Brimar Industries, Inc., Engraved Briply EPNP Plastic Nameplates, or comparable product by one of the following:

  3. Seton, Inc.
  1. Material and Thickness: Multilayer, multicolor, plastic labels for mechanical engraving, [1/16 inch (1.6 mm)] [1/8 inch (3.2 mm)] thick, and having predrilled holes for attachment hardware.

  3. Background Color: [Black] [Blue] [Red] [White] [Yellow] [Green].
  4. Maximum Temperature: Able to withstand temperatures up to 160 degF (71 degC).
  5. Minimum Label Size: Length and width vary for required label content, but not less than 2-1/2 by 3/4 inch (64 by 19 mm).
  6. Minimum Letter Size: 1/4 inch (6.4 mm) for name of units if viewing distance is less than 24 inches (600 mm), 1/2 inch (13 mm) for viewing distances up to 72 inches (1830 mm), and proportionately larger lettering for greater viewing distances. Include secondary lettering two-thirds to three-fourths the size of principal lettering.
  7. Fasteners: Stainless-steel or brass [rivets] [rivets or self-tapping screws] [self-tapping screws].
  8. Adhesive: Contact-type permanent acrylic adhesive, compatible with label and with substrate.
  9. Duct Label Contents: Each label shall include identification of duct service using same designations or abbreviations as used on Drawings, duct size, and an arrow indicating flow direction.
  10. Flow-Direction Arrows: Integral with duct system service lettering to accommodate both directions, or as separate unit on each duct label to indicate flow direction.
  11. Lettering Size: At least 1-1/2 inches (38 mm)high.

2.5STENCILS

Retain "Basis-of-Design Product" Subparagraph and list of manufacturers below to identify a specific product or a comparable product from manufacturers listed. Retain option and delete insert note if manufacturer's name and model number are indicated on Drawings.

  1. Basis-of-Design Product: Subject to compliance with requirements, provide Brimar Industries, Inc., Reusable Stencils, or comparable product by one of the following:
  2. Brady, Inc.
  3. Seton, Inc.
  4. General Requirements for Stencils: Comply with ASME A13.1 for size and color of background and size and color of lettering.
  5. Legend: Match terminology used on Drawings.
  6. Stencil Material: [Brass] [Polyester] [Oil board] [Rigid PVC].
  1. Stencil Paint: Exterior, gloss, water based black unless otherwise indicated. Paint may be in pressurized spray-can form.
  2. Stencil Ink: Interior stencil ink shall be compatible with interior surfaces and finishes.

2.6VALVE TAGS

Retain requirement in "Action Submittals" Article to submit numbering scheme for approval.

  1. Basis-of-Design Product: Subject to compliance with requirements, provide Brimar Industries, Inc., RBVT Stock or Custom 1-1/2 Inch Brass Valve Tags or RAVT Custom Aluminum Valve Tags or SSVT Custom Stainless Steel Valve Tags or comparable product by one of the following:

  3. Seton, Inc.
  4. General Requirements for Valve Tags: The content of each tag shall include a 1/4-inch(6-mm) top-line abbreviation identifying the system. Terminology shall match Drawings. Content, second line shall include a unique sequential 1/2-inch (13-mm) number to identify the valve.
  5. Tag Material: [Brass, 0.032-inch (0.8-mm)] [Stainless steel, 0.032-inch (0.8-mm)] [Aluminum, 0.032-inch (0.8-mm)] minimum thickness, and having predrilled or stamped holes for attachment hardware.
  6. Fasteners: Brass or stainless steel [ beaded chain; or S-hook] [16 Jack Chain] .
  7. Valve Schedules: List each valve in the HVAC piping system to receive a valve tag, on 8-1/2-by-11-inch (A4) bond paper. Include valve number, the system abbreviation (as shown on valve tag), location of valve (room or space), normal-operating position (open, closed, or modulating), and variations for identification. Mark valves for emergency shutoff and similar special uses.
  8. Valve Charts: In each equipment room where HVAC system valve are installed, provide a valve schedule as described above containing only the valves within that room. Mount the schedule in a aluminum valve chart frame with a plastic protector to the wall as close to the entrance as possible.
  9. Valve-tag schedule shall be included in operation and maintenance data.

2.7WARNING TAGS

  1. Warning Tags: Preprinted or partially preprinted, accident-prevention tags, of plastic or plasticized card stock with matte finish suitable for writing.

  1. Basis-of-Design Product: Subject to compliance with requirements, provide Brimar Industries, Inc., Accident Prevention Safety Tags, or comparable product by one of the following:
  2. Brady. Inc.
  3. Seton, Inc.
  4. General Requirements for Warning Tags: Preprinted or partially preprinted, warning tags when a hazard or detailed instruction are required. Tags shall comply with ANSI Z535, and be constructed of plastic or plasticized card stock with matte finish suitable for writing.
  5. Size: 3 1/4 by 5 5/8 inches (75 by 133 mm) minimum.
  6. Fasteners: [Brass grommet and wire] [Reinforced grommet and wire or string].
  7. Nomenclature: Large-size primary caption such as "DANGER," "CAUTION," or "DO NOT OPERATE."
  8. Color: Yellow background with black lettering.
  9. Caution: Yellow background with black lettering.
  10. Warning: Orange background with black lettering.
  11. Danger: Red background with white lettering.

PART 3 - EXECUTION

3.1PREPARATION

  1. Clean piping and equipment surfaces of substances that could impair bond of identification devices, including dirt, oil, grease, release agents, and incompatible primers, paints, and encapsulants.

3.2EQUIPMENT NAMEPLATE INSTALLATION

  1. General Requirements for Equipment nameplates: Identify equipment on the Project with a metal or plastic nameplate permanently mounted in a visible location directly on or adjacent to the equipment.
  2. Install or permanently fasten nameplates on each major item of mechanical equipment.
  3. Locate equipment nameplates where accessible and visible.

3.3WARNING SIGN INSTALLATION

  1. General Requirements for Warning Signs and Labels: Identify hazards to personnel and equipment with a warning sign or label. Permanently install labels as close to the hazard as possible while providing sufficient advanced notice for avoiding the hazard.
  2. Install or permanently fasten labels on each major item of mechanical equipment.
  3. Locate equipment labels where accessible and visible.

3.4PIPE LABEL INSTALLATION

Retain first paragraph below to identify piping systems by color-coded painting. Labels will still be required to identify service, pipe size, and flow direction.

  1. Piping Color-Coding: Painting of piping is specified in [Section099123 "Interior Painting"] [Section099600 "High Performance Coatings"]
  2. For pipes with an overall diameter including pipe covering of NPS 6 (DN 150) or less identify pipes with pretensioned pipe markers.
  3. For pipe with an overall diameter including pipe covering larger than NPS 6(DN 150) identify pipes with strap on type pipe markers. Straps shall be UV treated nylon and there shall be at least two per pipe marker.
  4. Pipe Markers should not be used on bare pipes with temperatures that exceed of 150deg F(65deg C).
