Language
Of the four official languages (Malay, Mandarin, Tamil, and English), Malay is the national language, although English is the one most widely spoken and understood. Most Singaporeans are bilingual; they speak their mother tongue as well as English.
Population
Over the past 50 years, the population of Singapore has changed 214 percent. The population reached a record low of 1.7 million in December of 1960 with an all-time high of 5.2 million in December of 2011. The following chart shows the population change from 1980 to 2010.
Climate
Singapore’s climate is warm and humid, ideal for sunbathing, swimming, sailing, surfing, and other water sports. But there is respite for those who need a break from the tropical climate: almost all shops, hotels, office buildings, and restaurants in Singapore are air-conditioned.
Although the monsoon extends from November to January, Singaporeans are accustomed to sudden, refreshing showers all year round.
Currency
Other than the Singapore dollar, the U.S. and Australian dollars, the Yen, and the British pound are accepted in most major shopping centers and department stores.
Religion
Singapore is an eclectic mix of people and religions. Buddhism, Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, Sikhism, Judaism, and Zoroastrianism coexist harmoniously. Towering cathedrals, exquisite mosque minarets, intricate Chinese temple architecture, and minutely wrought figurines in Hindu temples are all embedded in Singapore’s rich heritage.
